Fun with Golfweek's best---a test
« on: November 30, 2007, 10:33:14 AM »
Came in the mail last week.  Golfweek's supplemental, The Golf Life 2008..Best Residential and Resort Courses.  Just got around to reading the Resort section rankings and advertisements.

Congrats to Forrest and Jeff B by the way.

Anyway, I always enjoy the marketing efforts of describing a course or experience.

See if you can match the advertisement with the course it's describing.

1) "The secret to this course is simple.  Keep your eye on the ball, and off the mountains."

2) "All 14 clubs are put to the test here!"

3)  "Play the CHAMPION and experience 6 of the toughest 50 holes on the PGA TOUR."

4) " It's like heaven.  With golf carts."

5) "Longest course in XXXXX..."Dye-abolical designs...compelling yardages...daunting hazards...devious routing..."

6)  Every golfer owes it to him or herself to golf this heaven-sent course at least once in their lifetime."

7)  "Amazing golf oasis that gracefully emerges from the untamed desertscape."

8.  "In striking contrast to the earthen hues of its rugged backdrop."

9) "...George chipped in from 70 ft on the 18th...The Jersey guys buy the steaks and cold brews at Champions.  We're definately coming back next year.  It could only happen here."

a)  Tullymore, MI
b)  Las Vegas Paiute Golf and Resort
c)  Circling Raven, ID
d)  Ponte Vedra Inn and CLub, FL
e)  PGA National, FL
f)  Sandia Resort and Casino, NM
g)  Doral
h)  Jackson Hole Golf and Tennis, WY
i)  Desert Willow Golf Resort, CA

Michael,

Thanks......

What did Forrest and I do to deserve the congrats?

(My first guess will be that we managed not to kill each other the last time we were together, but I didn't think Golf Week reported on that kind of thing....unless it was Tiger and Phil! ;))

What exactly is a "devious routing"?

Does that mean you start out on the Wolf Course and then halfway through the round you realize you have mysteriously found your way on to the Sun Mountain Course?

I suppose the ultimate "devious routing" for a desert course would be to have the 18 holes go straight out into the desert (Out-Out instead of Out-In). Maybe give the carts just enough juice to finish 18 and then let 'em figure out how to get back.

Since I've played these two I'll have a guess...

Is #8 Sandia?
#4 Tullymore

No Chris, that would be a 'devious outing'  :D

My sincerest congratulations to the copy writers of these slogans who managed to describe their courses without using the word "challenging" or the phrase "carved out of..."
