There are on heck of a lot of open, flat drives at Westward Ho! and the course doesn't even really warm up a bit until the first par 3.  By the turn things have looked up considerably with the wonderful par 5 9th, but then disaster strikes with the rushes.  I figure that the rush holes are either make or break for Westward Ho!. If one likes these holes he can overlook some of the other stuff.  If one doesn't like these holes (ME SIR ME), then the course is condemned as a filthy, watery mess (well, not that bad - the course is okay, but to say its better than west country rivals Saunton and Burnham is a bad joke).  All that said, everybody should visit Westward Ho! because it is an historic club which is run fantastically (model club really) and it won't cost the earth.

Carl:

My point about Euro Club was when a layout is held to be that high and too many holes are simply per se tough but far from being fun / compelling from a design standpoint -- I see it as boring and overrated. It's a good layout when it hits its strides at certain instances -- but there's too much of a lull for me to call it thrilling -- the exact opposite of boredom.

Pinehurst #2    1999 version of the great course!
Ryder Cup venues 2010 Course and 2014 courses are pretty boring for rounds outside the actual tournament.
But Anthony "boring" is a word that doesn't really fit any golf course for everyone except a very few.

Matt:
If the European Club wasn't ranked so high--if it were instead ranked exactly where you think it should be ranked--would you still call it boring?

Carl:

The short answer = yes.

A golf course can be tough but still be boring -- some use the term slog.

European Club profits immensely from its location -- plenty of people will always give brownie points because of
the view of water.

I think the course is good -- but only in certain spots -- after that it fails to move the meter for me as did places
like Lahinch.
