Somebody mentioned the par-3 sixth upthread.  Picture below.  It is a fine hole.  Yellow flag can be seen on the far left of the green up on a shelf.  Very hard to get to from the front right bunker.

Mickey,

I too am a big fan of the Sixth.  The green is diabolical, although the backboard long right of the green gives the golfer a bit of a break.  What a great green complex.  I think all four of the par threes at Brora are neat, and it is especially cool that they play four different directions.  One of the coolest memories of the trip was hitting a half pitching wedge into 9, while my Dad hit in a 9 iron into the rocks behind the green.  There was a bit of wind that day.

JNC,

Exactly right about the par-3's playing in 4 different directions.  18 is as tough a finishing hole as you would ever want to have.

"Furthermore, what are the best Scottish heathland courses? I know England touts the majority of the heathland greats, but I imagine Scotland would have some as well. Thanks..."

Matthew Sander -

I am not sure how much heathland there is in Scotland similar to the heathland west & south of London. However, if the presence of heather is a characteristic of heathland, two inland courses in northern Scotland worth a look are Boat of Garten & Grantown-on-Spey. Both courses are off the A9 highway 50-60 miles south of Inverness. A little further south is Spey Valley, a new resort course.

Boat of Garten is a James Braid course but is probably too hilly and rocky to be considered a true heathland course.
