   This September a group of us are headed out to Long Island for 3-4days of golf. We have not been here before so our concern is what the weather conditions will be like and also how the conditioning of the courses  is. When do they typically start to punch greens and initiate the Fall maintenance procedures?  Any advice would be helpful,   Thanks,    Jack

Jack, in general September and October are the best months to golf on Long Island. You should get very good course conditions and the weather will still be warm in the beginning of September and cooling toward October, but very nice.

In general, September and October are the best months to play most anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere!  Assuming you avoid aeration, etc. per Jack's concern.

Sorry, when he said he would like to know the weather conditions, I obliged and answered. I also know that he wanted to know the aeration issues, however I do not have that information and figured I would let someone else answer rather than make something up. I do appreciate your advice for playing the northern hemisphere in October though, very helpful.

When I lived on Long Island, the golf courses taylored their conditioning from Memorial day to Labor Day, that's when the Hamptons were the busiest. All aerification took place before and after those holidays. As with a lot of courses in the north, in many cases, aerification takes place in the fall. I would certainly check before committing to play, BUT there are some great courses on the east end that I wouldnt pass up playing even if theyre were aerified.

I suggest that you call the courses that you are thinking of playing and ask when aeration is planned. They'll let you know.

I always loved playing toward the late part of September the most. Still warm, beginning a bit breezy but not too bad, and the leaves begin changing colors...
