Dimethyl sulfide: The unsung Hero of Golf
« on: July 28, 2010, 04:53:42 PM »
What is it?
Why is it so important to Golf?
Has the FBD been on the Lysergic acid diethylamide again?

I'm watching the excellent BBC series 'Coast' and being entertained by a scientist exposing seaweed to seaweed-eating bacteria in a test tube. The result? Why, Dimethyl sulfide of course. THE SMELL OF THE SEA!

The quintessential evocation of Links Golf. That heady, salty, fresh odour which wafts across our coasts. Maybe this should be the real definition of what Links Golf is? I'd guess the lovely pong isn't present at Sand Hills...?

Isn't it the case that smell is the strongest, most potent 'sense memory'?

FBD.
The White River runs dark through the heart of the Town,
Washed the people coal-black from the hole in the ground.

As Kramer asked on Seinfeld, why not a perfume called "the Beach?"  ;)

I foresee a gigantic shipment of test tubes, heading for Nebraska.

Marty, Around these parts, there's another odor(SH region). That smell you smell when here is known to the Ranchers as money.

I'm not sure if the new financial regulation legislation will completely ruin their business too, but, I believe they (the posers in D.C.) will try.

Cog Hill # 4 use to have a lovely putrescence emanating from the pond on 16. After the recent work done there, I wonder if it now is systemic throughout the course?  ;)

Marty,

Having kicked around science laboratories all my working life I just love the idea of defining linksland as having to have, naturally present, the romantic whiff of di-methyl sulfide; never, ever occurred to me. The downside would only be that a number of threads on GCA would be severely truncated!!

Would that oder make Spyglass Hill, The Links Spanish at Bay and Pebble Beach Golf Links, true links?

I think not.

The smell of the sea is a great and wonderful thing.
But give me the smell of gorse at Dornoch in late May.

In fact I believe the definition of links golf has to mention gorse...

Kelp and gorse? Is it the influence of these aromas on my psyche that explains my hopeless addiction to the gowf and the fields that its dramas are played out on?

I tell you, Marty, whenever I re-visit Scotland it is always the smells of the estuarine bays around the golf courses that dredge up strong, youthful memories of playing golf there over forty years ago.

Best odor ever?
The Gardenias in Los Angeles in early spring. Whether you're driving on the smug filled I-5, or, on one of their city owned POS golf courses, it's like heaven.
