I was wondering what thoughts you guys have concerning uniformity in bunker design/style/makeup on a particular course.  A beginning thought would be uniformity of sand in type, color and firmness.  I have seen some courses where fairway bunkers have different sand than greenside bunkers or fairway bunkers may have sand which is darker in color.

You could also have different style bunkers mixed throughout the course such as some with many fingers to them/cloverleaf versus say an oval or irregular shape bunker.  You could also have some bunkers with long native grasses on the edges while others are closely mowed and might be termed "gathering" bunkers.

Do you think that a mixture works better or is uniformity better?  Personally, I prefer more uniformity than randomness. I am not suggesting uniform depth or width, etc.

Jerry,
For looks, uniformity is the way to go.
For playability, uniformity is the way to go.

But, a bunker is one of only two hazards that exist in golf.  Therefore, I suggest that the correct answer is actually a mixture - let the player sweat a little.

Dan: I think don't like different types of sand.  Different styles of bunkers don't make much difference in how they play but can be visually unappealing. It is a hazard so you can make different depths, widths, etc., to challenge the player without resorting to tricks.
