Deer Island Country Club - Tavares, FL Pictures
« on: December 23, 2009, 12:26:05 AM »
On a recent golf trip to Florida, I made my way to Deer Island County Club, about 40 minutes NW of Orlando. This Joe Lee designed course was layed out on a 400-acre island in 1994. I never could find much information regarding the golf course, but after looking at the aerial pictures, it looked very interesting. After playing the course today, Deer Island CC is now my favorite course in Florida. Although it is a drive from the hustle and bustle know as Orlando, FL, it is well worth it in my opinion. Everything from the conditioning of the course, to the greens fees, to the unique change of every hole made it enjoyable.

*Thanks Ryan for the help with the pics!

Wow, I've had a good time at Deer Island before, and I'm glad to see it is in nice shape....BUT

There are over 1,000 courses in Florida and this wouldn't register in my top 100.  Favorite course in all of Florida?  Wow.  Rock Springs Ridge isn't very far from there, ditto Errol Estate.  I like both of those places a lot more than DI.  Sugarloaf, Mission Inn, and Bella Colina are pretty close in the other direction.  Lots in the surrounding area.

Understandable. I guess I should state that I am from NC and haven't played but probably 20-25 courses in FL. The ones I have played, however, seemed too much to mock one another (with the exception of North Hampton in Fernandina Beach). I guess for me, I love Deer Island because it's a change from the 'typical' FL courses I'm used to. Plus, the setting was great in my opinion. It was just quiet and peaceful out there.

Another Joe Lee course, outside Vero Beach, FL, is Bent Pine.  Some say it is the best of Joe Lee.  The pics read many similarities.

Brett,

You have to play that course in a stiff breeze to see it's faults. I like it for the same reasons you do, remote, quiet, reasonably priced, well kept.

When it's warm the hundreds of alligators that roam the course will keep you on your toes.  ;D
