Adam,

Pacific Grove Municipal Golf Links has an ad in the GO section of the Monterey Herald as follows:

GOLF

$30 Walk

$45 Cart

Monday-Thursday

WINTER SPECIAL

Now through End of January

Tee times may be reserved up to 60 days in advance.

Now that is affordable golf.

Thanx Bob,

I just paid $25 to walk nine holes. And, I did that twice.

While I was there I got the sense that the city has realized an error in their ways and are making attempts to re-gain the market share they lost through pricing and policies toward the local.

The course has had a pruning of the excessive trees that parasite Leach planted. They also have had the lower branches cleared, making the course more playable while giving it a cleaner appearance.

After seeing how much the Old Navy course, Monterey Pines, has spruced up their grounds, the competition is there.

On a side note, I was shocked at how the new clubhouse and pro shop buildings were configured. Apparently there was no consideration for the golfer, or their experiencem when these examples of wasteful municipal spending were designed.

Adam:

Did you get over to Ford Ord?   I would like to know your thoughts on what Gene Bates did and didn't do on those 2 courses.

Joel,
My overall impression was that Bayonet was somewhat emasculated, while the Black Horse was somewhat improved.

The addition of 100 bunkers is neither here or there, even if 'they' think it has made it harder. It's the loss of the original green's character  that's lamentable, as well as few whole holes. The new green sites, with their collection areas, all look like they could've been built anywhere. To me, the greens resemble Ken Dye's greens at Pinon Hills. Using three foot sharp rises to create sections. While they may look tricky, sadly they are not. Especially when compared to the varied originals.(or previous iteration).

My biggest shock was not about the golf but the hundreds of new homes added to the neighborhood, without changing any of the logistics to move traffic off the fort. Somebody sure made out like a bandit on that real estate sale. Since it was public land, how'd we public do? Anyone know?

Adam I hope all is well with you. Keep the faith. You showed me a day for the ages at Pacific Grove many GCA years ago.

In it's heyday, the fort had thousands of troops and civilian workers.  Even with the invention of CSUMB and a few hundred homes, I doubt that traffic is their greatest challenge.

Mike. You likely have not seen the mile long traffic line waiting to exit the fort at 8 am. When the troops were there their need to leave the fort was not an issue. Now it is especially at the exit to Sand City.
