Brown and Beautiful
« on: November 25, 2009, 02:42:19 PM »
What are some of the best examples of courses that play brown, fast, and firm in the US?

Also, what are the best examples of those in the UK?

Pictures would be great.  I remember seeing a couple awesome photos of Fishers Island on here.

Thanks.
Cheers,
Jordan

Rye (East Sussex, England) is going to take some beating! (Until Sean pulls one of Pennard from summer 2006!)

Huntingdon Valley can be brown but is "fast and firm" for the most part:

Scott's picture of Rye was taken about 10 mins before the heavens opened and brown disappeared for the year. Mind you it was Oct and we got drowned!

Jordan,

It's pretty sad that there aren't more responses of courses in the states, although maybe not for the golf travel industry in GB & I!  ;)

Sean, that last photo is something else.  I would reckon a putter play to be something akin to that of Plinko on "The Price is Right."  Amazing geology.

I think "Bill's Bathtub" is on this hole (short left, hidden in the rough), right?   :o ::)

Some 10 years ago Kington was the course which really got me thinking about the imbalanced use of bunkers on golf courses over landforms and gravity.  It really is a course all should see and I am hoping Buda Pests can drop their belt notching for a day or two and make their way to see a truly unique course.  Most probably wouldn't become as enthralled about this style of golf as I have, but none could walk away from Kington indifferent.

Yes, your tub is tucked away in a special place, though now the bunker is big enough for you and your wife!

Well, here's my US contribution.  I have a few more from Kingsley, but I don't want to put off DL as they were more occasion of new project traffic than straight maintenance.

I really wish I would have gotten a picture of Newman Golf Course in Ithaca, NY during their drought in 2005.  I have never played a faster course in my life.  Absolute thin shanks would go through the green from over 160.  That is dried clay with wispy grass right there--undulating concrete.

Let me check my Wilmington archive too.  They might have something worthwhile.

Nah, I am gonna hit the hay.  Its been what, since the 98-99 season that I have seen the Wings struggle like this.  If they don't find a way to win some games, and I mean win from the back and really place defense as the top priority, they are gonna have a dog fight to make the playoffs.  The next month is huge - they need to make up ground on all those teams ahead of them except for Chicago and SJ (barring serious injuries like the Wings have these two teams are the runaway Conference leaders) if they want to avoid a very tough second half of the season.  Mind you, the Wings were nothing stellar back in 96-97 until they hit the playoffs and they won the Cup so there is hope.

Joe,

Another great regret of no pictures.

I have used Grand Island as an example in classes, discussions, and even my R&A bursary; I find it the perfect example of what maintenance ought to be from both sustainability and playability.  It really is too bad everyone would rather go up to that Boulder place or whatever, but how do they even have the money to do it?  We both know that money is few and far between for Michigan.  Just all too bad.

Sean,

Tis true.  I still just can't see them being less than a 4 seed.  Or Chicago win the division.  All that is just too bizarre, but we have hit the injury bug hard.

Tis also the nature of Gary's playoffs that anyone has a chance, and you know that as well as I do.  We have suffered more upset defeats as clearly the better team than anyone else.

Are you serious?  They enlarged the tub?  Actually, we WERE both in on the day we played in 2005!  It was a pretty amazing sight, since we couldn't see over the broken ground to the bunker, and we were hitting from different angles!
