Plainfield
« on: August 24, 2011, 06:47:33 AM »
We all get a chance to see a true gem in Ross' Plainfield this week.  (Too bad Hurricane Irene will muck up the tournament, but that's another story).

What should we look for?  What are its features of note?

(I've never seen the course, but have only heard glowing reviews)

Tom - added the mention that Irene is a Hurricane that could play havoc with the Eastern US this weekend.

Among other things we will all see first-hand the benefits of extensive tree removal - Plainfield rocks!

I played Plainfield a few years ago the day before the NJ Open. It is a fantastic golf course that is every bit the equal of the Lower at Baltusrol or any other course in the state with the exception of Pine Valley. It was a few years ago, so I don't recall the holes precisely, but I'm told the tour has had a big hand in rerouting a few holes. There are a few great par 3's and wonderful uphill par 5 to a green that sits in a little hollow on top of the hill.

My one complaint with the golf course (#17) was apparently the Tour's as well. It required a 3 wood tee shot up to the top of a narrow fairway on top of a hill, but it was absolutely impossible to keep the ball in the fairway as any shot that carried the bunker and into the fairway ran down to the bottom of the hill leaving an extremely challenging uphill 2nd to a green that didn't hold.

There have been a few changes Plainfield has made in consultation with the tour, however ther course has not been rerouted.  The changes include:
Hole 3) New back tee which play about 200 yards.
Hole 4) New back tee which play about 400 yards (uphll)
Hole 8) New tee slightly forward and right of the existing tee box.  This was added to give the pros a better driving angle when played as a par 4 (par 5 for members) to avoid the tree at the 150 marker on the right of the fairway
Hole 10) New back tee playing about 410 yards
Hole 13) New back tee playing about 460 yards
Hole 18) Removed the pond on the leftof the fairway and removed trees at the dogleg.  The trees were replaced by deep bunkers.  The redesign is more In line with the original Ross design and makes for a much better hole.  The tour will play the hole forward making it a drivable par 4 of 285 yards.  The members plat the hole at about 360 yards.

Other than 18, the other changes have a very minor impact on the day-to-day play of the course.

my apologies - rerouting was the wrong word. Tweaks, modifications, or restorations, might have been more accurate.

Most underrated course in America?

The par fives are magic, especially #12 and #16.  Par threes #6 and #11 are very cool.  Stick in nicely featured par 4's like #4, #7, #8, and #15 (I liked it even though it's in that low area that everyone hates).  You've got a top 50 in America course IMO.

Ben has accurately described the best holes on two different threads. Par 5 #12 is world class with plenty of options, perhaps the best use of a tiny creek you will ever see. Par 3 #11 reminds me of the devil's AH at PV. Front pins are scary and spin control is absolutely critical.  Just great that these two holes are back to back.

We probably won't see it much, but Hole #1 is one of the simplest, yet most unnerving starting holes I can recall. First of all, the clubhouse/squash courts are hard to your left. Not an issue for the pros, but for nervous guests, slamming one into the building can be embarrassing. Many bail out right into woods and/or OB. The tee shot is partially blind, another unsettling feature, especially with a hard right to left tilt. But the hole is all about the green. It has a great right-to-left and front-to-back tilt that I have three putted way too many times. It really should be a simple par, but it has bogey or worse written all over it.

This place looks stunning!  Just going through Ran's review and Joe's amazing pictorial link and am even more looking forward to this week's event.

A few thoughts.

Great few holes to start out with and I really like number four.  Generous off the tee but and uphill second shot that looks like death if you go long!

The second shot into 9 looks deadly with those gigantic bunkers below the green.

Love the green complex on 11.  Very daunting from the tee as short is no good.

Looks like Phil could hit some flop shots out of the ponds on 13 & 14!  Very shallow and pretty ugly.

Love the green setting on 16 as well as the tilt of it.  In fact on closer inspection a lot of the greens look to be pretty tiled.

I notice a few blind tee shots which is fun because I don't get to play many.

Should be interesting to see how it holds up against the field.  Not that I care too much, just looking forward to seeing the course all week!

By the way, did anyone See Gil on Golf Central?  Steve Sands did an interview with him and the panel actually talked about all 4 courses for a few minutes.  Very unusual for Golf Channel.
