Need input on public golf in New Jersey
« on: May 26, 2009, 10:57:40 AM »
Hey Everyone!

A good friend of mine is going to be looking for a game somewhere between New Jersey and Delaware.

He's not especially gifted in the game of golf so the more playable the better.  Obviously a public course and he doesn't wanna spend more than $100

Thoughts?  I have no clue about public golf out there....
What does it matter if the poor player can putt all the way from tee to green, provided that he has to zigzag so frequently that he takes six or seven putts to reach it?     --Alistair Mackenzie--

Gosh, pretty big area there!  So let me throw out three New Jersey courses I've played in the last year that I think an intermediate golfer would like:

Pitman
Wedgwood
Riverwinds

White Clay Creek is another good option just outside of NJ that's in Delaware.  The course is always in great shape.

There's another course that I recently played that's in NJ outside Philly called Running Deer.  Ron Jaworski bought the course and is doing some serious renovations to make it his flagship course.  The course has a great variety of holes.

Joe,

How about Westwood? I find it charming and cheap.

I would be a bit hesitant to hardily recommend WCC as I think many intermediate golfers will grow tired of the numerous forced carries.

I've never played it M2.  It is now on my radar!  Although their web page didn't exactly entice me.  They have a flash-based series of photos, eight of them in total, and they barely show anything besides some nice pretty bushes!

I understand it was designed by the same guy who did Pitman (which I haven't played). There is some interesting movement in the land for Jersey.

Garden State Golf Guide lists Horace Smith for Westwood (same guy who did Freeway).  It lists Findley (with B. Ault redesign) for Pitman.  Westwood is less than 6000 yds from the back tees.

Pitman is a Findlay design.  I have a list, although it is likely incomplete, of courses Findlay did in New Jersey and it does not include Westwood:

Tavistock C.C.
Basking Ridge
Bridgeton
Freehold
Moorestown
Woodbury
Oak Valley
Pitman
Burlington
Medford Lakes
Ocean City
Wildwood
Blackwood C.C.

But perhaps Westwood is the newer name of one of those above?

Edit:  thanks for the info above Alex!

I guess I was told the wrong thing about Pitman.  The owner said the designer was a golf pro.

Whoever designed Westwood did a fine job , imo. There is variety of direction, elevation change, distances of par threes, fairway slopes that makes for a fun day of golf.

Well, Findlay was a very good golfer, and I believe he gave golf lessons so it is understandable if he was considered a 'golf pro'.

I think Findlay may had to come back from the dead to do Westwood.

Good point.  Don't know why I was assuming Westwood was from the Golden Era.  ;D

I'll second that.  Rather wide fairways too.
