Tom Cox is a pretty good golf writer (anyone read "Nice Jumper?").  He visits Gleneagles & St. Andrews and lives to write about it for the Financial Times.

Brilliant.

I love this quote when someone was talking about Gleneagles:

"Jack Nicklaus designed the PGA but God designed the other two!"
Bunkers, if they be good bunkers, and bunkers of strong character, refuse to be disregarded, and insist on asserting themselves; they do not mind being avoided, but they decline to be ignored - John Low Concerning Golf

Tom Cox is usually a good read. He now seems to be writing for the FT on golf related matters on a regular basis .  I enjoyed "Nice Jumper" and keep meaning to buy "Bring Me The Head of Sergio Garcia" which I think is based upon his year trying to make it as a pro golfer.

From reading Nice Jumper his early years were spent in Nottinghamshire hence his recommendation of Hollinwell.

I've not read or heard of many compliments for the Nicklaus designed PGA Centenary course.  Did I read somewhere that it is being redesigned for the 2014 Ryder Cup?  A shame that tournaments are no longer held on the King's Course but I assume it's now deemed too short for the pros.
2014 to date: not actually played anywhere yet!
Still to come: Hollins Hall; Ripon City; Shipley; Perranporth; St Enodoc

Andrew,

A few holes have been re-designed by David Kidd though not to great acclaim from anyone really especially not the pros.

That's worth reading, if only for the anecdote at the end where the writer is bending over to kiss the ground from which he had hit a good shot to the Road Hole, only to have his caddy say "I took a pee there yesterday."

Proof that you should only kiss the ground when it is snow.

David,

Thanks for the link. A nice little article with some good anecdotes  ;D

Andrew,

I too enjoyed "Nice Jumper", especially as growing up in Derbyshire, the local junior scene was one I was familiar with! And why wouldn't anyone recommend Hollinwell!  :D

I'm not an expert on the changes on the PGA at Geleneagles, but here is the photo tour I did last year, and I've tried to list the changes as I know them...

And Mr. Nicklaus asked for his name to be removed as designer of the course .

It is apparently going back on now...as they will be more involved with changes to the course.
