900 yard Par 3 South Africa
« on: April 01, 2009, 01:45:40 PM »
This was discussed previosuly on GCA but, recently an article and video was posted showing Padraig Harrington and Raphaël Jacquelin playing this wild par 3 with a driver.

Watch the video >> http://www.compleatgolfer.co.za/new_site/content/news/singlepage.asp?id=856

Padraig is a great player but this is truly amazing factoring the drop, the wind, hitting a driver and not losing his golf ball.

Now that is a real drop shot par 3.

Garland would have to aim at Chile.

There was an article discussing this course and this wild 19th hole in particular in one of the past issues of the European 'Golf Course Architecture'. Each hole on the golf course was designed by a different tour player.

What sort of ballmark repair tool does the course offer for this hole?

A pointed shovel is all you need to dig the ball out from being plugged 6" deep into the green.

I find it almost impossible you could hit the green on the fly.  The land around this par 3 may slope and allow the ball to roll towards the green like a bowl.  The concept of this golf hole is just funny must have been a group of guys sitting around drinking one evening to come up with the idea about hitting off a mountain to a green shaped like Africa.

Matt,
Just think negatively, you're saying you can hit a ball off of a mountain and not even hit the continent of Africa.

From that height there is no roll.

When I was playing the opening holes at Banff with GCA thinking about hitting off the top of the mountains is sheer instinct. 8)

I couldn't play that hole. I was getting vertigo just from the video shots looking down at the green.

Ralph,

I was thinking the same thing.   You couldn't get me within 10 yards of that tee.  :o  ;)

You're both one step ahead of me.... I wouldn't even be able to get onto the helicopter required to play it.
