Javier Arana article by Alfonso Erhardt
« on: February 12, 2009, 01:14:23 AM »
Just a heads up, there is a very nice article on Spanish architect Javier Arana written by GCA's own Alfonso Erhardt and published in the January 2009 issue of the British magazine "Golf Course Architecture".

Well done Alfonso!

A good profile indeed...

Here is the link to the magazine: http://www.golfcoursearchitecture.net/

It is a quarterly mag, well worth supporting... There have been articles from others on here, at least a couple by Mr. Goodale...

I just read the article last night, a very good piece Alfonso.  Well done.

I would agree the magazine is well worth supporting.  I've been subscribing to it for the last couple of years.

Thank you very much for your compliments.

I have to say it was quite enjoyable to write and just hope he gets a little more recognition, which he well deserves. No excuses now for not playing his courses when on holiday over in Spain!!!!!

Alfonso,

Were there other Spanish architects of Arana's era about whom we should know? What of more modern architects about whom I know nothing such as Espinosa, Gancedo, Lopez Segales, Soler, Pinero and Garrido, some of whom I remember as tour players, but most are merely names in a course directory?

Well done on the article.

Mark.

Mark,

Thanks for the compliments.

Arana had no Spanish competitors in the 50s or 60s. The only competition he faced came from the UK  (Mackenzie Ross laid out a couple of nice courses, as well as Pennink) until Trent Jones laid out Sotogrande in the mid 60s and changed everything.

Of the Spanish tour players you mention, Gancedo has done some reasonable courses although none which is worth travelling to play. In Spain, real estate development highly conditions course desing, so probably not the best place to develop a golf architectural career. Olazabal laid out what everyone considers a fantastic course in Sevilla (Real CLub de Golf de Sevilla), which I have not played.
