I'll second the 1st at Riviera, when we were teeing off; we played with one of the assistants there so it was him, and my buddy and I.  As we stepped onto the first tee, everyone walked out of the pro shop to watch, and then everyone walked out of the restaurant, there was probably over 12 people watching us.  It isn’t like they are far away either; they were all probably 5 feet from the tee box.  It is quite a wide landing area, but you are still trembling not to shank it with all those people watching.

don't think its too keep the riffraff out, the entrance (no gates or security guards) and clubhouse are very low key and many people would drive by without it giving the place a second glance

Matt, my question wasn't about keeping anyone out.  Rather, what I was really getting at is whether the hedge was added as a safety measure to protect passing cars (and presumably limit the club's liability) or was it more to provide a sense of isolation to those teeing off?

sorry my mistake, its must be for safety because the view from a vehicle is pretty good across the first fairway and the second and 14th tees plus 13th green are easily viewed from the road. I think most people are too busy trying to find Pebble to give Cypress much more than quick glimpse

Not a specific course (in part because there are so few) but an overall type: those that start with a long par 3.  In 1970, the 18 hole course at St. Charles CC outside St. Louis opened with a 190 to 200 yard par 3.  There was no driving range.  I never liked hitting a 3 iron to a smallish green as my first shot of the day.
