Purchase Country Club or Purchase Golf Course
« on: February 06, 2007, 02:22:03 PM »
Anyone know who designed the course that once resided across the street from the Blind Brook Club in Rye Brook, NY, called either Purchase CC or Purchase Golf Course? Doral Arrowwood conference center, with a 9-hole course, is now located on the site.

I think it's Nicklaus

If you mean the Doral Arrowood course, it is Robert von Hagge.

Sorry for being vague. I'm looking for the correct name and designer of the orginal 18-hole course.

Anthony,
The 18 hole course existed at least as late as 1951. I've seen an aerial photograph of it and my notes indicate that it was a rudimentary design - back and forth holes; greens flanked by identical bunkers, etc. I'd be surprised if it was designed by an established architect.

The nine hole course at Doral is as Mike says above, designed by von Hagge.  Golf Club of Purchase is next to Blind Brook, on the other side of SUNY Purchase from Doral, and was designed by Nicklaus.

Craig,

The 1934 aerial I'm looking at shows a plain golf course but not as quite as mundane as you make it sound. There are at least 3 fairway bunkers.

It turns out the original name of Purchase Country Club is Kingsridge Country Club and it was designed by Thomas Winton opening in 1929.

Hope this helps.

Anthony,
I hope Mr. Winton's family didn't take offense at my comment.

In my research at the Archives I've noted so many NLE courses built with what seems little imagination - a squarish piece of land with the holes mostly running parallel or perpendicular to each other (and few fairway bunkers) - that I wrote them off as local munis or small commercial efforts.

Any idea when Kingsridge closed finally?

Craig,

I was told it closed at least 25 years ago.

As far as the design, remember that then as now, members/owners have a very big role in determing the design of the course, as did the amount of money spent on the project.

If I bump into the ghost of Mr. Winton, I'll pass on your apolgies.

A question for Anthony or if anyone else knows

In your book "to the nines" is Doral Arrowwood mentioned?  What was the criteria for 9 hole courses making the grade for the book?

Doral Arrowood should not even be in the PHONE book. It's awful.
