Examples of MacKenzie's proposed par-4?
« on: June 08, 2002, 09:58:57 AM »
Everyone knows MacKenzie's famous sketch of the par-4 that won the Country Life Magazine award in 1914. It was built as the 18th hole at Lido Golf Club, but died with that course in 1942.

Recently, a version of that hole has been revived, this time as the 7th hole at Stephen Kay's McCullough's Emerald Links in Egg Harbor Township, N.J.

Anyone know of other incarnations out there of this hole?

Brad,
I got Dan Sheperds press release yesterday on this that says it was your idea to recreate this hole and that you consulted on this new/old version with Kay.

Did you guys just use MacKenzie's rendering? Or were there old photographs involved too? The photos of the original at Lido seem scarce and the aerials make it hard to detect how much of the award winner was built.

I am trying to use the same design concept on a par 5 finishing hole. Has anyone seen that done?

Geoff,

we had no photographs, just those detailed design plans where, on close inspection, MacKenzie got very specific on elevation changes. There were some areas, as I recall, with +/- 7 feet vertical change.

It was a dead flat area we had to fill up with that hole, at least 7-acres, I think the hole is at least 100 yards wide.
