Winter Projects - what's going on at your course?
« on: December 06, 2008, 07:37:54 AM »
What winter projects are going on at your course this season?

We're doing some bunker work, clearing some trees, and reworking the 3rd tee to give some more usable teeing area.  All good projects that are fairly low cost.

Also expanding a fairway (French Creek 16) to the left to bring some blind bunkers into play.  But this requires a few additional irrigation heads, so it'll be a post-freeze project.

These all had the involvement of Gil or Jim.  I can't tell you how good it is to have the golf course architecture design team involved.

Here at Colonial, were just fixing areas that have settled around subair outlets, irrigation heads, caps where irrigation wires were spliced and also moving trees.
We began moving trees, trying to re-capture from old photos where trees had been lost over the years. Were also moving trees to fill in voids and also screen some condos behind #13 green. Myrtles are being planted behind #4 tee to help screen the road where 2 HUGE pecon trees were. The trees were removed to allow for a better angle off the tee.
Lastly, were just sodding fescues areas that were disturbed during the renovation. Oh yeah, and spraying for POA..... >:(

Here on the other side of the pond at Wilmslow it's drainage, levelling tees, trying to make the bunkers more consistent in playing performance (drainage, sand uniformity) and a little tree removal. Drainage is the priority, despite this being one of the best drained courses in this very wet part of England.

At Burnham 3 very surprising and most influential bunkers were built on #8 a few weeks ago.  Some of the very cool low lying bunkers were given a higher profile, most notably on #11.  Of course, the transition away from poa and back to seaside grasses continues.  A new mega tee has gone in on #15, some 50 yards behind the left tee along side where the houses are.  I spose more things are in the works as the Brabazon is going to be hosted by Burnham in 2011 (or is it 2012?).  Though, to be fair, Burnham has never stopped evolving and it is hard to imagine it ever coming to an end.

For this winter the decision was made to forego the couple of more fairway expansions for next year on the plan and put the money into essentially finishing off the tree removal part of the plan.

At St Davids in Wayne PA, Ron Prichard with Doug Mottin doing the construction work are:

Exanding the fairway on #4
Reworking and restoring fairway bunkers on #4
Expanding the green on #4
Expanding the green on #6
Reworking fairway bunkers and greenside bunkers on #7
Re-establishing an approach bunker on #7
Praying for multiple trees to die and a recovery to the economy so the work can continue.

This spring they/we:

Restored greenside bunkers on #4
Added shared back tee on #5 & #8
Added/restored carry bunkers on #'s 5&8
Reworked fairway bunkers on #5
Restored lost fairway left side of #5
Rebuilt greenside bunkers on #5
Restored greenside bunkers on #6 to originial configuration
Added new back tee on #7
Rebuilt members tee on #7
Reworked fairway bunker on #8
Restored lost fairway on #8 up hill towards green and left side of entire hole
Added cross bunker on approach shot to par 5 #8 and rebuilt existing green side bunkers

Ron & Doug have worked on holes #4-#8 in the spring and fall of this year.  We are lucky to have a committee that does not micro manage these guys, and that they don't need to be micro-managed.  Full disclosure, I am one of the three members (and the least involved) on the restoration team.

Ron Prichard is a genius and we are lucky to get a talent like Doug Mottin early in his career as an independent contractor.

Here at Paxon Hollow in Phila area we are continuing our work with Jim Wagner of Hanse Golf Design.

re-build greenside bunkers on hole #3   (completed)
add new bunker in right green approach hole #3  (completed)
expand fairway at green approach Hole #3
eliminate greenside right bunker hole #2
add new combined forward tee for holes 13 & 16
continue tree management work

as dan said in original post, it is great to have a highly skilled architect such as Jim, who fortunately lives close by to give us some time when he can.  Jim should be given alot of credit for working with his local township owned golf course to make tremendous improvements.

Two things strike me about this...redo, and $33M.

I trust it included a new $28M clubhouse.....

Wow.
