The Last Sunset at Beechtree - featuring a cast of GCAers
« on: October 08, 2008, 01:13:17 PM »
I got Mayday, Joe, Alex, Phil, Chip, Eric, Jimmy, two non-GCAers, two staffers, and a relocatee:  not bad.  They should have a couple pix up soon too.  I will also after lunch.

Now the intended audience for this piece is everyone, not just hardcore GCAers.  Many people who never heard of Beechtree and are maybe marginally familiar with Doak will read it, so this is a broad brush stroke.  read it with that in mind and have fun.

Thanks to everybody.  Some of you may be contacted by GM for another article, in a similar vein, not totally GCA-centric.

Great weekend everybody.  Enjoy the piece.

Moreover, the course is by Tom Doak, the designer who has taken the golf world by storm ever since his epic Pacific Dunes opened and swatted Pebble Beach from its lofty, long-time perch as the greatest course in America with a resounding thud.

Jay, you could not be farther up Doak's hiney if he ate you for breakfast.  Nice article, nonetheless.  I indeed enjoyed it immensely.

Thanks for reading Mike.  I'm glad you liked it.  I'm really not up Doak's hiney and I think he'd tell you that.  Right Tom?  Remember, I once wrote that he set off every dork alarm in michigan.

Personally, I thought the line you guys would latch on as suckbutt material was the bit about "The Doak Difference:  craftsmanship and quality."

But I balance that by taking a potshot at the par-3 2d.

Look:  1) Doak did a great job there and

2) beechtree is amazing.  That's the way it is, and I say that with cold, clinical precision.  It's hard to criticize a guy when he makes so few mistakes.  Is a baseball writer up the hiney of a pitcher who throws a two-hit gem to win a playoff series.  no, he's just reporting a good job.

But I'm glad you liked it, Mike.  I'm also glad some really nice, really smart GCAers will get into a few articles about Beechtree.

It was good times all around...

Nice allusion there.  Actually, he'd be DOWN Doak's hiney in that case, right?  ???

Looks like a great time. Excellent read.

It's stuff like this that makes this place special. Ran and Ben should be proud.

While there were some interesting tidbits of info, it was mostly just Jay doing what he does best..  ;D

God love you for mentioning my "long sky high ball flight" rather than than the snap hook onto the practice range (among other ugly shots).

I would never have joined a club if we had a course like Beechtree around here for less than $100.

I didn't know Pebble Beach was ever the greatest course in America...let alone Pac Dunes!

Nice article, sounds like a cool place.

We've had this discussion before about think tank...it's a pretty good assessment, I think.

A nice read Jay, thanks.  It was a pleasure meeting you the other day.  We'll have to get there a little bit earlier next time - whenever/wherever that may be.

I liked Chip's analogy re Doak and Hemingway.  Beechtree was my second Doak course played, the first being Heathland, which I have always enjoyed.  I'm hoping to skip to The Old Man and the Sea next spring in Oregon.  Not driving!  ;)

No worries Jay...great article, makes me wish I lived close enough that I could drive over to Beachtree and take a look myself!

Farewell Beachtree!

Well, that was an entertaining read.  Nice going Jay, you had a little bit of everything in that one... some actual GCA discussion and description, some tribute that surely brought you some howls from the cynical about being a Doakafile, some great humor about the night before the morning after.

I probably missed any of the original discussion threads on Beechtree's closing.  So, I have a question about the actual rolling-up process that I'll ask on another new thread and hope it wasn't covered before...
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

Hiya Brother William!  Salve, summa optimus magister!  Semper ubi sub ubi ;D  How's tricks in the scrpitorium!  Hey Bill McB!  I mean Cardinal Bertrand!  Thanks for popping in to the Aedificium!

Thanks a lot guys for enjoying it.  I have a new one coming soon, I'm keen on called "Golf's Worst Blind Date Ever," which I'm having a good time writing.

Seriously, great hearing from you two!  Have fun at the Dixie if you're going and hug Whit for me.

I agree I had Phil's swing.

hey Phil!  See the city, see the zoo!

Golf prowess?  Word around the campfire is you plunked one in the water on two for old time's sake ;D :o

Glad you guys had fun.  We should do an NYC or Boston date soon.

What about the Coore/Crenshaw course near the Cape?  That's public isn't it?  Be a good place for a GCA get together.

J-
Looking forward to reading in detail.
I was prompted to take a peak as I thought #2 was pretty good.
The landing area right of the green while - hidden is ample.
Mike B and I both used that gracious area.
The hole looked good too.

The 13th was the one I wouldn't want to play again - and I played it twice that day.
"Doak called the par-3 13th "the best Eden Hole I've designed yet," referring to the epic par-3 at the Old Course at St. Andrews, which was his inspiration."
Thinking of Bob, Rihc, Bill, George, Neil, Dr. Childs, & Tiger.

Good vote, Mose.  Anybody else wanna play Red Tail in a few weeks? On a weekend?

Calling Randy VS!  Calling Randy VS!  Brad Tufts too!  We can all celebrate for our beloved Red Sox.
