I am sure you have heard of Tommy Tanto who owns Tanto Irrigation and may be Toro's largest irrigation contractor....he owns a course  www.totteridge.com   check it out....very good rees jones course....

A friend of mine recently played a course in East Liverpool, Ohio called Turkana Farms GC. It's a family owned operation that's about an hour from Pittsburgh airport. He liked it, said it was well maintained, had an 'open' feel, and was very reasonably priced, under 30 bucks. 

I mentioned this course to George Pazin, but I don't know if he's ever been over to play it.

David-- depending on your father's connections in the Pgh area and where he is located:

Oakmont is most obvious; nearby Fox Chapel (Raynor) is another great option w/Pgh Field Club literally across street. All are very private. Totteridge-- east of city-- is private but perhaps more accessible. Others headed east include Tom's Run/Chestnut Ridge public complex. Perhaps too far east but receiving great reviews is recently re-opened Bedford Springs resort.

West of city are previously mentioned Allegheny CC with recent impressive Gil Hanse improvements but currently aerated. Sewickley Hts GC nearby. Both are very private.

Solid public choices nearby include Cranberry Highlands (municipal) and Pgh Nat'l Golf Club (formerly Deer Run). Both north/west of city. Best hidden gem, in my opinion, is Butler CC also north of city (NOT Butler's Golf Course but Butler CC). And finally way south of city is Pete Dye's Mystic Rock at Nemacolin Resort altho rather pricey and out of the way.

Can you share a little about your father's game, preferences, etc.? Does he like old, new, hard, quirky? That would help determine where I would send him.

Burgh privates are out of this world - public options are only okay. Now I gotta go look up Butler CC.

* addendum - Pittsburgh isn't the easiest place to find your way around, particularly as there seems to be omnipresent construction; if you know where your dad will be, I can tell you which options others have suggested will work best.
