Founded 1909

I'm working on a centenary book for a club founded in 1909. I know the 1909 clubs founded in Great Britain and Ireland and continental Europe. I should be grateful if you could point out to me significant clubs founded in other continents. It's not meant to be an exhaustive list - just the big names. Clubs founded, not course built. Thank you.

Pretty slim pickings in the US. I could only find two prominant club's founded in '09 - Interlachen and Mayfield.

Mark:

From perusing the Centennial history of GOLF in Philadelphia it does not look like any clubs were founded (incorporated) in this area in 1909.

The only thing I can think of in that vein is the Merion Cricket Club Golf Association was officially begun in 1909. Technically that was Merion East and West Ardmore until the MCC Golf Association to finally voted to split away from MCC thereby creating Merion G.C. as distinct from the ongoing Merion Cricket Club (basically a tennis and squash club). That vote to split away was taken on Dec. 7, 1941 ("a date that will live in infamy", FDR). So essentially what is now Merion G.C. was The Merion Cricket Club Golf Association for thirty years. That MCC Golf Association was actually a corporation.

I'll have to research it for you, but I believe the Shawnee Country Club was formed in 1909. The Shawnee course, always thought of as the resort course for the Buckwood Inn, which it was, was also the home site for the Shawnee Country Club.

These has always been some question, inmy mind, whether or not the course was built for the Club with the Inn benefiting from it as Worthington was behind both, or that it was built for the Inn and the Club was just a lesser partner in it.

There is some support for both sides...

I went to Leatherstocking Golf Club this summer in Cooperstown, NY and I believe it said that the course was designed by Emmet in 1909.   Does that help?

Thank you very much - I can easily follow these up. I think NGLA was opened in 1909 although it was founded earlier.
