Biarritz influenced greens
« on: September 10, 2008, 12:11:10 PM »
Over the years I have seen a few.  Highly doubtful that it was intentional, but occassionally Ted Robinson built some that were brutalized with his wonderfully generic palm tree framings and bunkers.
A wonderful twist on the classic is to be found at TPC River Highlands.  This short drivable par 4 16th provides great drama every year in the tournament.  Miss the green in the wrong spot and the mini-chasm eliminates almost any chance of an up and down.

Robert--

It's a fantastic hole from tee to green.  One of the best drivable par 4s I've played.  It's the beginning of an excellent finish, with the par 3 16th, the white-knuckle 17th, then the dramatic 18th.  One of the best finishes on Tour for sure.

One of the best I've seen on a modern course is #16, a par 5 at Southern Dunes.  I was quite surprised to see a deep Biarritz swale on this par 5, made the hole very interesting.

There's also a lovely little Redan-esque par 3 there, but it's short and downhill so it really can't be a Redan, right?  ;D
