Thanks Matt. That was fun -- especially to be plugged in between Ben Crenshaw and Bruce Lietzke! I'm flattered  :o

How about Lietzke's comment about Essex?! Bob Weeks must have asked him about Donald Ross. He said, "I don't care if it's Donald Ross or Donald Duck, this is simply a great golf course."

I got a kick outta that!

Bruce is right, and funny...sometimes people put too much emphasis on who designed the place that they already have pre-conceived notions...bruce is right becuase it is a great course that happens to be designed by donald ross, and not the other way around...

the interviewer asked beck how he felt "being the bob dylan of the 90's" and beck quitely responded "i actually feel more like the bon jovi of the 60's"

I agree completely, Matt. I think Lietzke's point was well made with his funny comment. In other words, who cares who designed the course, it's great.

There is too much emphasis on who designed the course these days -- with even Ross and his contemporaries being heralded for layouts that aren't really that great.

I say this as a fan of the Golden Age architects, of course.

Jeff,
Without emphasis on who designed the course, what would be the incentive to seek out courses like Blackhawk, which might take some time to reach me via word of mouth...

Yet given the buzz on the architects of Blackhawk, I will try to make it out for the opening...

 ;D

Essex looked great.
