"The best 5,600 yard course in the world!"
« on: September 15, 2010, 07:36:19 AM »
From Ran's last line in his plug for the Falsterbo course profile now on page 1 of the Discussion Board. He plans to post it Monday.

Any guesses? Mine is Merion West.

Phil

I don't know which course Ran has in mind, but I have a sneaky suspicion it is Cavendish.  Ran must have seen Merion West yonks ago.  But then, Cavendish isn't 5600 yards, more like 5550 or 5720 depending on which tees one plays.  Nonetheless, I drank from the well of Merion West and will take Cavendish any day.

Mind you, I think there is a wee course in Denmark, Germany or some such place that is meant to be very good, but I can't place my finger on it right now.

I'd venture a guess that he saw this course during his recent trip to southern Sweden. Maybe somewhere in Denmark? We'll have to wait until Monday to find out for sure.

I bet it's Fanø, given he's just posted Falsterbo.

Its got to be Cavendish! - Its a absolute cracker of a golf course - one of the best preserved courses to Mackenzie's original.

Ran must have flown into Manchester on his way back from Sweden and had a quick drive to Buxton on a GCA secret visit  ;D

I spoke to Ran, it has been mentioned here and use some common sense considering he was just in Denmark/Sweden.

Ran should of course change this title to "The Best 5,600 Yard Course I Have Played," since I doubt he has seen many of the other contenders for the title.  But, I've never seen Fano, either.

I haven't seen it yet but Healesville by Mike Clayton is getting some pretty decent kudos down under and is 5,500 yds

My best shortie is Pinehurst #1.  Absolutely delicious, even if you stretch it to 6000 yards from the tips.

Forward tees at Pine Valley

A very good Call.  Joe Bausch and I (and John Moore for the front 9) kept finding the forward tees last week and marveling at how they would potentially change the strategy of the hole.

Actually, trying to pick the best course from the forward tees might be a fun thread in and of itself, especially with the new trend of five tee boxes...

How long is Ballycastle in Northern Ireland? Can't be much more than 5600 and great, great fun, right on the coast.

I did a quick search on Fanø and according to one web site, it's 5180 mtrs; that's a bit closer to 5800 yds. ???
The suspence is killing me :D

Tom,

Did you ever see Dunfanaghy in Donegal? It's a par 68 and is about 5800 yds. I think it's a fantastic course and is definitely "my favourite 5800 yds course".

Fanø is great, great fun, but the best at its length is a stretch. For one thing, you have to tee off mats, which tells you how cramped this site is. There's simply no room for proper tees.

5600y? Starting from the 1st tee, How far would that get you around Royal County Down or Cypress Point?

5600 is not very far. TOC was 6378 in c1821!

Cape Arundel is about 5900 from the backs, so maybe 5600 from the middle.

That place is great fun.
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....
