I lived in Lompoc for a couple of years and it is a great spot for a golf vacation. Inexpensive motels, some good restaurants and great golf. Besides LP there is also the military course at Vandenberg, Marshallia Ranch, very good course that is now open to the public I believe. Also for those with club access, the Village CC is nice as well as the Ranch Course at the Alisal and Santa Maria CC.

And just north of LP, you've got SLO CC, Monarch Dunes, Cypress Ridge and Hunter Ranch.  Avila Beach and Morro Bay too. And yes, Marshallia Ranch is open to the public. Very affordable and fun course.  Eat at the Hitching Post in Casmallia after your round. Great lodging in Shell Beach and Avila Beach!

Wouldnt have the same problem with it if you didn't have to hit a 3i off a blind tee shot to get yourself in position to do so!

Your analysis of the course is spot on.

No doubt there are issues with the 15th but to listen to all the whiners bitch and moan about one particular hole and then proclaim it's OK to toss the baby out the window with the bath oil is a bit much. What about the totality of the other 17 holes?

La Purisima is a very and challenging public golf. For all the ink that Sandpiper has gotten in Goleta if La Purisima had just 20-25% more visibility as opposed to being in Lompoc the reality of its overall standing would be considerably better.

One thing that should be noted, though it does not affect the architecture, is that part of the draw for me of La Purisima was that it was such a great deal for an LA guy.

In checking the rates this morning, I was distressed to find that the weekend rate is now an astounding $91 plus $19 for a cart.

At $110 and with gas prices what they are, the drive to Lompoc doesn't sound so nice anymore...which is sad because despite it's shortcomings, and it has many, I still would choose La Purisima over most other courses in the surrounding 50 mile radius at the pricing of yesteryear.

You can knock that $110 down to $72 with a noon tee time and by dropping the cart or $50 for twilight.  Half the fun of LP is playing in the afternoon gales anyway.

True indeed, but when comparing apples to apples you could do that same thing at any course - Lost Canyons, Ojai, etc etc - I am just talking about the fact that you can't really call it a value proposition anymore in comparison with other similar venues.  Used to be cheaper at its rack rate than some of the competition was (Rancho San Marcos, Sandpiper) on their twilight rates!
