Biggadike 5th at Mid Am IN California
« on: April 02, 2008, 05:35:36 PM »
Andrew Biggadike shot 72-75=147 in the Callifornia Mid-Am at Stevinson Ranch last weekend. He finished solo fifth. Stevinson Ranch was the site of the 2005 King's Putter, where McBride earned the nickname 'Ace' and Fleisher ripped the heart from the California team. Reported in Golfweek.

Not to be too picky, but that is the amateurgolf.com California Mid-Am.  It is not a California Golf Association event.

Yes,  the Southern CA Mid Am is at Toscana CC in Indian Wells in about 3 weeks.

So when is the CGA going to run a Mid-Am?  And for that matter, a Masters?

If it ain't soon, I will have to wait for the Senior State Am ...    :-[

Yeah, they really need to. Participation would be great, I can guarantee you that.

H-U-G-E difference between the State Mid-Am & the .Com Mid-Am. Nonetheless, good work on going low & finishing Top-5 ;)

Actually, there is no official "State Mid-Am" in California.

Good job, Andrew!

Hopefully we'll both qualify for the State Am again this year and I'll see you down here in SoCal for once!

If only that were true, I'd be a much happier person.  Aside from the weekend before, I hadn't played since I lost my match in the SF City over a month earlier.  I worked straight through most of those weekends.  I almost had to withdraw from this event too.  All right, enough of the "poor me" routine.

It would be really nice to see an NCGA Mid-Am and a CGA Mid-Am started, though I probably wouldn't have the vacation days available to actually play in them.  I do think it's a bit bold for an independently-run tournament to call itself the California Mid-Am, but there is no existing event so they are filling a gap.  The combination of the very good course and the name do attract a better field, not to mention the exemption into the Stocker Cup for the winner.

Chris played great all day the second round.  He practically knocked down the flag sticks on 12-15 then handled those tricky finishing holes very well.

Andrew, the fate of administrative guys like me hangs with smart engineers like you.  So while I continue to wish the best for your golf career, selfish me is pleased you do work so hard.

But of course I'm just giving you a hard time.   ;D

Way to go!  Looking forward to reading and hearing about more great results.  In the meantime, we know who the #1 man is on the VMware golf team.

I appreciate the congratulations and thanks all for noticing, but in the hopes of deflecting this thread away from me and towards something on-topic ...

What are everyone's thoughts on the second hole at Stevinson Ranch?  That's the one hole out there that I just don't get the design of.  The left half of the fairway seems like a worse route in every way: it makes the hole longer; it gives you a worse angle into the green; and it's tougher to hit (even though it's wider) because you're hitting across it rather than directly up it.

Can anyone think of a reason why they'd chose to play the hole up the left half of the fairway?

There's a good chance I've asked this on here before, but we always discuss the same things over and over anyhow.

Yep, makes absolutely no sense to me either, Andrew. The hole would be fine if that whole area were simply brush.

We did discuss that hole big-time during and after The King's Putter event we held at Stevinson a few years ago.  And it was a rare unanimity, as I recall - NO ONE could think of any reason to ever go left.  It does just seem superfluous.  The only guess was maybe in certain hellacious wind conditions that route becomes more doable than the right.

Andrew - didn't one of the leaders have a problem with the tree on the second hole and took a double bogey?

I found myself wondering if the tee was originally supposed to be closer to where the first green is.  Then you'd be hitting straight up the wider left part of the fairway and could optionally take a risk to hit it to the narrower right portion for a better angle and more direct route.  Perhaps during the design / construction phases the first green was moved farther from the road and required the moving of the second tee?

You must have a lot of sources.  It was a bogey, though.

The first round leader hit it under the tree and was amongst the roots I guess, because his shot hit one and kicked up into the tree, then kicked back out into the fairway.  He then hit his shot just right of the green and two putted for bogey.

From looking at the aerial, it seems like that fairway could have been relevant if the green ran from front left to back right with bunkers placed on the right side of the green.

Sure it would have still been a longer shot in, but at least it would have been a better angle to approach from.

Andrew,
With thoughts like that entering your head it's a tribute to your skills you could finish 5th. ;D
