No, not played at Chelwood Gate Golf course,
but played some 10 years ago at Piltdown Golf Club,
Uckfield. www.piltdowngolfclub.co.uk

18 in the morniing followed by another after lunch.
Enjoyable but not great, just a good day out.

This course was completely private and built by a Hong Kong based man of $$$ in his back garden at a cost of several million pounds. It was opened twice a year to local charities for a golf day.

Last I heard a couple of years ago was that he'd stopped playing golf due to injury and the course was going fallow.

Think a "British" version of Ellerston.

I'll do some research and get it's name.

The course was/is known as Birch Grove, a couple of 2002 articles on the place.

That was really good catch.
Do you know how one could find out about when Google pictures were taken?
As I also heard that they had started to cut the course again.
It was designed by Donald Steel and Martin Ebert.
I didnīt find any info on the net regarding its rebirth.

I'm not sure how to date Google pictures. I had heard through the grapevine that the course was underway again. I may drive over there and hop under the fence to have a look again.

Nearby is the excellent Royal Ashdown Forest and also Piltdown which as Mervyn says is fun but not great.

I always wondered exactly where that course was. There has been some discussion of it on here before - once again it's down to the lottery of the search function.


Ville, we can do a little better than that.  One of the guys joining in this years BUDA Cup played there last September on his way to Alwoodley.  If you drop me a message to my work address below, I'll forward it to him next week and perhaps he can tell you more.   (From memory) I had the briefest of conversations with him about it and he did think it still needed work.
