Thanks for the fascinating information.  I sometimes wonder if there is not a strong, direct correlation between the pedigree of the club and social graces.  I was a member of a club for years full of ten cent millionaires where I wouldn't want my wife or young kids hanging around unaccompanied.

The calcutta is not dead, at least in Texas.  Typically, if you have a low and a mid-level handicapper teamed together who can play to their handicaps in the heat, they can win some money.

There are people who organize and conduct the auction for a fee (from outside the club), and an assortment of gamblers (many private clubs in Texas seem to have no shortage of these) who handicap the teams and bid accordingly.  It is not unusual to split the net auction proceeds by flight for day and tournament money.  I enjoyed watching the smart money assessing who had been playing well, where the guests came from, and otherwise doing their due diligence.

A guy I know often made out with a few hundred in his pocket after entry fees, never buying his team outright, but taking the 25% option share that the purchaser of the team was required to offer to the team members.  It would not be unusual for a gambler to own half dozen to 10 teams, and they prefered the teams to exercise their option so they have something more substantial riding on the outcome.

My old in Cincinnati had a member-member where you could pick your partner and had to buy half your team. The other half went up for auction (you could buy your own team if you wanted). Typically the pot was at least $15,000 with the top 8 places getting paid. The tournament is played over 36 holes - first nine is a scramble, second nine alternate shot, third nine best ball, fourth nine total score.

The first year I didn't have my dad as my partner, my new partner (He was a 10 and I was a +1) and I were somewhere in the middle after day 1. In the best ball the next day, he shoots a net 6 under on the front and I threw in a few birdies too (although missed a 3-footer for a birdie). I lit it up on the back, shooting a 65 for the day and he managed not too choke, although it took some serious mental coaching on my part. We ended up second by tenths of a shot (handicaps/scores are only rounded to the nearest hundredth) but split $1,600 since we only bought half of our team. The next year we teamed together and thought we'd buy our team in the auction. We didn't even have a chance as everyone was off to the races to buy our team. I told everyone they were idiots because I doubt I had another 65 in me.

Anyway, it was the best event I've ever played in at a club. There was some serious choking every year on the last nine of total score.

"Seminole is on my wish list for courses I'd just like to walk during a tournament. Is the Coleman open to the general public for spectating?"

George:

I don't think the Coleman ever was but I think this one might be. On the other hand, there may be a different definition for "public" in Palm Beach than there is in Pennsylvania.  ;)

TEPaul,

I don't believe this event, or any event is open to the public.

Jerry is referencing a rekindled event from yesteryear, which has been resurrected for the time being.

I'm pretty sure that NO Calcutta is involved.

Calcutta's are pretty much extinct.

Clubs risk their various licenses, operating permits and perhaps even their tax status if they engage in Calcuttas.

In Lou's wild, wild west, a few mavericks may remain, but, they're mostly extinct due to the dire potential consequences should a municipal, county, state or federal agency take exception.

Hey guys, on the subject of Calcuttas, I was just wondering when, if ever, was the last time the USGA punished anyone for conducting a Calcutta?
If so, what was the punishment?

 ???

Chuck,

When was the last time that a Calcutta was reported to the USGA ?

And, what authority would they have in the matter ?
