Confirm the rumor

I have heard a rumor that Muirfield Village in Columbus has shut down for the summer.  I was told that the green conditions had gotten so bad this year that they closed the course and are trying their 4th (I think) total redo of the greens in the last ten or so years.  Does anyone have more details on the situation?  Is it true?

And I took full blame then, and retain such now.  My utter ignorance in not trumpeting a course I have never seen remains inexcusable.

It is true -  the course is supposed to be closed until next years Memorial Tourny

Is the course closure a function of bad design, bad maintenance or just bad luck?

It would be great if some knowlegeable super could add information to this report.  What could wipe out greens to that extent considering the near perfect appearance just two months ago at the Memorial?  Pythium or nematodes?  After rains during TV coverage it seemed to be draining fine, so it wouldn't seem to need new subsoil drainage structure.  What situation would cause them to spend that kind of money and loss of fees?

As a super, I would have a hard time saying one way or another what the problem is. Did the course close because the greens were really that bad, or was there other reasons? Pythium is a fsat mover, but knowing the Nicklaus Organization, and their placement of super's, I'd have to believe any disease would have been properly checked. I'm curious for more details, that's a radical move for any business to take!

Word on the street is that the club goes so overboard for the Memorial, that they cut the greens too low, and stress out the grass so much, that it has little or no chance to recover.

This "closure" may have something to do with that.

During my recent visit to Columbus, numerous members at other clubs talked about this very issue.

Columbus can get very hot and humid.  With all the water, I wonder if the MV site is not extra humid.  Probably a bigger issue is that the air flow is greatly impeded by all the huge trees.   I am not sure that the greens are shaved closer for the Memorial.  As I recall, I played the course in August one year and the greens were ultra-slick.  Nicklaus, who was there that day, told the group that the greens were actually faster than during the Memorial.

Someone needs to get ahold of Mike McBride, super @ Murfield. If memory serves me right, they just re-seeded all their greens a year or 2 ago.

I wish someone knew the truth here.  The story I have now heard is that Nicklaus doubled the dues last year for in-state members and is doubling them again this year.  Combined with closing the golf course (Incidentally, the Invitational was scheduled for Sept. and a lot of members had to tell their guest to cancel their flights) Nicklaus is trying to drive out the locals and turn it into a true national membership (Like Augusta).  Apparently, the greens are bad every year in the summer, due to the stress of the Memorial.  I hope a member will reply (Even if it is with a fake name - in this case, I understand) and tell us the true story.
