Sad news, indeed.  McKee's well-chronicled role in the vision for Bandon Dunes is probably the single-most important factor for the creation of this amazing resort.  To think of golf in America without Bandon is somehow almost impossible to comprehend.  Having your name associated in a major way with such a significant piece of American golf history is an amazing legacy.

Very sorry to hear this news...I wish I'd met Howard McKee. From reading Stephen Goodwin's characterization of him in "Dream Golf", he sounded like a fascinating guy. It seems he had a pretty interesting career beyond Bandon, but from a golfer's point of view, the contribution he made to that resort (starting with, I believe, finding the actual land for Mr. Keiser) is a legacy to be admired.

That is truly a sad passing.

As a land use planning consultant myself, visiting Bandon first hand, I can recognize the extreme difficulties, trials and tribulations, ups and downs through the entire permitting processes that were faced by Howard and his team.

The outcome with regards to the resort is a marvel of resort planning. The sheer genius of the layout with the ancillary buildings "hidden" from view, the lack of "impact" on the land, and the aesthetic beauty of the place are as miraculous as the golf courses themselves.

If Bandon Dunes Resort (itself) is Mr. McKee's legacy he's done good.

I’ve had the distinct pleasure of being with Howard a number of times he will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

His legacy will be the Bandon Dunes Resort for sure.

The memorials seem most fitting.

A great man has passed on, but he left his mark on the face of the earth.

May God bless him.
If a player insists on playing his maximum power on his tee-shot, it is not the architect's intention to allow him an overly wide target to hit to but rather should be allowed this privilege of maximum power except under conditions of exceptional skill.

I have let this topic go for several days because I am not at all confident I have the words to express how much we owe Howard McKee or how much he will be missed.  I am thankful for John Gunther's article which rescues me from the need to be all-inclusive when I am not capable of it.

Howard was not really a golfer, but he did view golf as an enlightened form of outdoor recreation and thus was a champion of the game.  He also believed that a well-designed golf course could make a beautiful piece of land more beautiful, and he was extremely pleased that the courses in Bandon serve as good examples.

More than anything else, Howard invested a great deal of his life and art in the state of Oregon -- not just at Bandon, but earlier in his career when he helped to write the land-use laws which allow places like Bandon and Bend to thrive.

He did have a favorite spot on the property for Old Macdonald and we will do something appropriate to honor him there when we get started on the course in January.

I only met Howard once -- in Lloydminster, on the Alberta/Saskatchewan border where Mike was investigating a potential golf project. While the majority of Mike's crew went to the site, Howard went into town to look into permitting, bylaws and zoning. He showed up later at dinner. It was nice to have met him, and clearly he played a large role in Keiser's golf projects. It'll be interesting to see how Keiser's development projects go without him. Sorry to hear of his passing.

in today's Chicago Tribune sports section, someone bought some space and there was a very nice, simple tribute to Howard along with his picture

While reading the book about Bandon Dunes, Dream Golf, I thought it was really neat to learn Mr. McKee had a hand in a great many of the subtle details around the facility.

Next time you are staying in the Chrome Lake or Lily Pond Cottages, take a closer look around at everything.  You can thank Howard for the huge shower heads, for example, and some of other unique detailing that makes the accomodations so special.

A very nice tribute article.  I especially appreciate this paragraph about the saving of the virgin land. It is a great walk through very rare terrain. I can think of no better idea for a lasting tribute.

"The 250 to 300 acres starting on the ridge that runs through the middle of the Bandon Trails golf course and heading west to the property’s boarder near the beach will be untouched, except for the existing golf course, Keiser said."

I'm responding to this thread because of my belief that who Howard was/is is worthy of us keeping him in front of us for a while longer.

Though I truly speak only for myself, I am comfortable that each of us that worked with Howard at Bandon Dunes, and elsewhere, were touched by who he was, by his spirited and high manner, by his energy and passion, and by his skill, developed over his very productive and full life, a skill that helped each and every one of us to elevate how we interact with each other & how we interact with the earth.

He didn't necessarily give us answers, but he surely helped us ask the right questions.....his skill wasn't in arriving at conclusions, but in being fully involved, and inspiring others, to be in the great journey of discovery.

That is how I hold Howard McKee.

The last time I saw Howard the other supts at Bandon Dunes and I were having lunch at the Trails, and through the side door bounded Howard, smiling, focused, engaged.  He sat himself at our table, and within minutes, through his energy and his charm, had each of us happily throwing our hats in the circle, to a man agreeing to be engaged in the work of sustainability at Bandon Dunes.  After we were all hooked, after we were touched by him, well.........off he went to the next table, selling, no doubt, to every staffer seated there, a free ticket on the journey of caring for Bandon Dunes, for each other, and for the earth.

That same afternoon he was at the Agronomy Center, exhorting staffers to "keep the spirit, keep the soul of Bandon Dunes alive."

So guess what?  We are.  Remembering Howard, and doing the work, his and our inspired work!
That is the kind of man Howard has been to me, and I am blessed by it, and richer for having known him.

I pass those blessings on to all of you, and yours, this holiday season!

Mr. Jefferson,

Wonderfully expressed and even more fitting on the eve of a Wonderful Day!

Thank you,
