The conclusion I get from this thread is that at least 100 fine clubs that originally date from 1890-1920 have moved when their formerly "country" locale within city limits became surrounded by the expanding urban sprawl.
Some kept their older original courses near their "big" clubhouses but built newer modern courses in a truly suburban location (e.g. Phila Cricket, Baltimore CC, CC of VA) and others just sold the old property to the inevitable developers and started over (e.g. Aronimink, Phila CC, Overbrook, Fresh Meadow, Meadow Brook and, in a fashion, Atlanta AC and Deepdale).
It seems that if a club has a solid membership and can find a place to go - where there's a will, there's a way.
As to the good courses that just packed it in - they seem to all have been in NYC where relocation was just too expensive. You can find them in the book "Missing Links".
Do we know of any good clubs in any other cities that sold out and disbanded rather than rebuild elsewhere in the area?
