project update
« on: August 10, 2002, 11:31:05 AM »
I am just back from three weeks on the road -- Palm Desert, New Zealand, Australia, and Hawaii -- and responding to a request for an update on our courses.

Texas Tech:  all is shaped, about nine holes are grassed, a bit behind schedule as we expected.  I haven't actually been back there since the last hole was shaped; Jim Urbina and Brian Slawnik are ensuring that it gets finished the way we built it.  Should open sometime next summer.

Stonewall:  I'm headed back there tomorrow, and by the end of next week we should have all the green complexes shaped.  Four holes have been planted already, and we're trying to get them all by the end of September.  What's been finished so far looks great, like it's been laying on the ground forever.  An all-star team of talent on this job -- Don Placek and Toby Cobb doing the conducting, Kye Goalby and Brian Schneider and Eric Iverson doing the shaping, and Kyle Franz and Dan Proctor doing the finish work.  With that crew, who needs me?

Cape Kidnappers, N.Z. -- Looking to start in September.  See related thread about it.

The Golf Club at St. Andrews Beach, Australia -- in collaboration with Michael Clayton Golf Design.  Two 18-hole layouts, each 6700 or 6800 yards, with a 7100-yard Composite Course built into the design.  (I think this is a really novel way to fight the distance gap, although with the A.G.U. owning its own course next door, the politics of getting a tournament are doubtful.)  The property is a mile from the ocean, five miles from The National.  No ocean views, but the contour is IDEAL, as good as anything I've worked with.

Cabo del Sol -- on hold for now.  Really haven't heard that much from them about when they might start.

Barnbougle Dunes -- Greg Ramsay is still working on getting his funding for the courses approved and in place.  Would be ideal if we could get it built while we're going back and forth to Australia and New Zealand for the other projects, but we'll have to wait and see.

The Crest, Palm Desert -- Plan is in permitting, hoping to move earth (rock) next spring or summer.  For what it's worth, my son thought this property was more exciting than Cape Kidnappers or St. Andrews Beach, even though he loved New Zealand.  It's an unusual design, with several holes that go uphill or downhill as much as 75-100 feet, but it's all golf right up against the mountains with some spectacular backdrops and views.  I'd tell you what I think the potential is, but Golfarc would get mad.

That's all I can tell you about for now.  There are 3-4 other projects in the pipeline, all of them exciting, but it's premature to talk about them.  Life is very good right now.

Tom Doak:

Happy to hear things are going well for you and your team.  One of these days I'd like to stop by Stonewall again and see how things have evolved.

Tom,

Good to see things are doing well.

Jeremy and I and maybe Graeme are planning a trip to Aussie in September/October or November next year if the big trip across to Casa de Campo doesn't come off.  Would be great if we could meet up.

I have now teamed up with Jeremy and we will make it official next year when I get back from Scotland.

Thanks again for everything in USA we really enjoyed our stay.  Both Graeme and JT say it was one of the best things that has ever happened to them!!  Can't believe I had to convince them to go!!

Anyway, give my regards to everyone and good luck in Aussie.

Cheers

Brian

Tom,

Glad to hear things are going well for you and your company. In regard to The Crest, what part of Palm Desert is the course scheduled to be built.

I don't know how I would ever have been able to look into the past with any degree of pleasure or enjoy the present with any degree of contentment if it had not been for the extraordinary influence the game of golf has had upon my welfare.

Tom,
Great to hear so many courses are in the pipeline and life is so good for you. Two questions if you don't mind:

With so many courses in the works in so many worldly places, are you using more sketches and drawings to give to your field workers a better idea how to carry out your vision?

Also, you mentioned a 7100 yard composite course at St. Andrews by the Beach, is that really long enough or really novel way to fight the distance gap? Wouldn't just rolling back the ball do it?
Thanks!

Tom,
Thanks for posting an update to let us know what you are up to. I'm glad you are enjoying your projects and opportunities after all you've done over the years to help take architecture in a positive direction. Congratulations and keep up the good work. :)

Mr. Doak,
I'm glad to hear that all is well and that buisiness is booming. Please say "HELLO" to Toby Cobb for me while you're at Stonewall. I worked for him last summer while I was at Friar's Head. I have alot of respect for him. Thanks!!

Mr. Doak, I had the opportunity to play Pacific Dunes last Fall. It was the best golf experience of my life.  also a trip I hope to make again soon.  I recently tried to purchase a copy of your book through Amazon, and was unable to.  Any suggestions on where it can be found.

thank you

Recently, I was in Philadelphia. Tom Paul conducted a tour of
Stonewall. We found Jeff Silverman of SI in the clubhouse,Buddy Marucci there to play, and the Renaissance team on Stonewall New (As opposed to Stonewall Old.)You certainly give a great party even when you're not there!

YB

I'm really surprised to hear Buddy Marucci was playing at Stonewall.  When the club and Tom Fazio parted ways and I was hired to do the first course, and Jay Sigel got involved as a design consultant, Buddy resigned as a potential member.

Re:  questions:  The Crest is on a plateau right above Palm Desert -- up there by the lighted cross, on the road to San Diego but much closer in than Bighorn.

And, while I'd love to roll back the ball myself, I don't have that power.  The Composite Course at St. Andrews Beach is one alternative.

P.S.  I forgot to mention one other project we've signed up to do -- Harmony Golf Club, a private golf-only club not far from Cuscowilla.  No schedule for that one yet, as they have quite a few memberships to sell first.

re.Tom's posting on new projects from 8/12.
The Harmony Club, near Cuscowilla on Lake Oconee, will be pure golf, classic throwback, walking friendly, core routing.  We asked Tom to give us a top 5, and he had NO restrictions.  The lake area has Fazio, Jones, Cupp, Nicklaus, Crenshaw/Coore, Weiskopf/Morrish...we asked him to top them all, and if we can inspire a membership, he'll make us proud.
It'll be a new generation blend of the characteristics found at Pine Valley, Peachtree, and Augusta, but w/ Tom's control of the course elements.
We're breaking ground at 100 members, capping it at 275.
