One reason I golf--Pacific NW edition
« on: September 07, 2007, 01:16:30 PM »
Note I did not say "the ONLY reason I play golf"! ;)

Sometimes one just needs a couple of hours to get away, with some peace and quiet and to hit the proverbial "reset" button on life, without having to think about all the nuances of championship architecture, technicalities such as whether a centerline bunker properly challenges the scratch player, or how much to tip a forecaddie, or whether or not the host will comp the round, etc...

Sometimes it's not about the settling up of bets, or who's been getting the upper hand lately, or whether or not to go back to the tee after not finding the ball you're sure is in that bush someplace....

Sometimes it's just you alone, the first tee time, the bald eagles, the herons, the mist rising off the freshly mown fairway, the line of the first putt on the dew-covered green, the branch of the sometimes flooded river, and the sun rising and glinting off the top of a nearby mountain, playing as quickly or as slowly as you desire...

Don't forget to enjoy the pursuit, as much as the destination...

OK, just to make sure this is somewhat architectural and not entirely off-topic, here is just one reason this course won't ever be found on a local area Top 100; the infamous dog-leg 130 yd par 3 around an evergreen!

Peter,

I know that's Mt. Si in the background, is that Mt. Si golf course?  Been a while since I was there.

Thank you Peter.  The setting does enhance the spirit and elevate the game.  Going out while the sun is setting with a bag over your shoulder, listening to the sounds of evening, and a golf club hitting a ball is a rare joy.  I don't know why the entire world doesn't play golf.

Yes, good eye Craig!

That is indeed "Royal Mount Si" golf course, and holes #6, #10 and #4, respectively--$20, 6300 yds, incredibly tiny sloped greens and 2hr 45min of tidy, crisp late summer morning fun!

Great stuff Peter, My first thought was Beacon Rock but by the 2nd pic knew I was lost.
Your post reminds me of a great toast by John Aylward at a wedding reception.  "What if, WHAT IF, the hokey pokey IS what it's all about?

Where's Mount Si?

How far from Tacoma/Seattle?

Mount Si (pronounced sigh) is a small mountain in the US state of Washington. Although just 4,167 ft high, it lies on the western margin of the Cascade Range just above the coastal plains around Puget Sound, and towers over the nearby town of North Bend. The mountain was named after local homesteader Josiah "Uncle Si" Merritt. It was made famous in the show Twin Peaks, which was filmed in North Bend.

Only about a 45-minute drive from Seattle, the mountain is a favorite outdoor destination for Puget Sound locals. On most summer days one can count numerous hikers on the trail to the summit. Washington State tourism material asserts that Mount Si is the most-climbed peak in the United States.[1] (However, this claim is also attached to least one other US peak, Mount Monadnock in New Hampshire.[2])

Reminds me of the tranquility you can find at Elkhorn in the Oregon Cascades.

Thanks for bringing back good memories...
