Their Green to tee walks.

How do the top 100 or 200 fare when put to this SOLE test ?

Pat,

We're going to have to come up with the proper amount of paces since we all know greens can be too close.

Pat,
This thread is just a cheap attempt at moving Plainfield back to where it belongs.  ;) ;D

On classic courses, should we judge original tees or added tees?  Do you give a free pass to tees that have been lengthened over time?

I disregard some extended green to tee walks if it means outstanding holes result (for example Shinnecock 9th green to 10th tee or Merion East 13 green to 14 tee (at least it goes past a bar).

I'm not a fan of tees - old or new - that are directly behind greens so that groups playing to the green watch the group ahead hitting.

Walking past a bar is worth a lot of points in my book.

At the OLD COURSE after one putts out there is a lot of "retreating"

One of the best is 'The Majestic' in Michigan. No hole is anywhere near any other, spread out over 1500 acres of beautiful wilderness with much animal life and lovely lakes. If you enjoy a good walk with a little golf, play all 27 here!

I'd be very surprised to see anywhere worldwide beat Muirfield.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Too bad Mid-Pines isn't in most Top 100s, because it was the first course I saw that really nailed it.

Mountain Lake has some wonderful green to tee transitions.  The #3 tee is actuallyindented into a greenside bunker on #2.  #7 is an island tee.  #13 tee is almost another tier of #12 green.  # 18 has tees in an arc between road and lake.
(#and 18 are not original)

Tom,

8 is the island tee. By the way, what's your golf availability this week?

Here's my thread from a few weeks back with my thoughts on the subject.

Anthony,

The second tee at the National golf Links is totally tied into the first green complex. If play is backed up you're pitching to the first green while players are hitting off the second tee - in full view. Would you be so bold as to suggest Mr. Macdonald was wrong in placing a tee right behind a green?

I think it is unbelievably cool!

Michael,

I don't know if it's bold, but that is one of the holes I was thinking of. The other is the seventh at Fishers Island where the extended 8th back tee (built by the club) is right behind the 7th green. I think when players are on those tees it ruins the concept of the green pads seeming to float in the air.

Sean,

I think if your caddie turns to you and says, "your target is the fat bastid with the ugly haircut standing on the next tee," there is a problem with the design.

Kyle,

I'm a fan of island tees. By the way, even though you didn't ask, I'm not available for golf this week.

Muirfield even has lovely green to the next fairway walks for the player not teeing off in the usual alternate shot game.

Even with the walks across the bridge, I think Oakmont has tremendous green to tee walks (but then again, you knew I would say that).

Two modern courses that are great walks are The Rawls Course and Applebrook.

I see I totally missed this point  :D!

I want golf to be "a good walk enhanced". You just want golf.

Doug -

Doesn't the third nine require a decent swim before you get any chance to do any walking?

Mike;

You could  :-\. I would take the boat though  ;).

PS: It really is a beautiful area. We got back to the Clubhouse after the 1st 18 and saw very many cars, and we were surprised, having seen not a soul on the course but a worker.

We all play golf for our own reasons. I had thought this thread was going to address enjoyable sites where golf is played. I misunderstood. Majestic fit my assumed criterion nicely though.
