Murphy Creek-Denver?
« on: August 29, 2007, 12:55:29 PM »
I am playing my first Kavanaugh course next Thurs on a trip to Denver. What architecture details should I look for at Murphy Creek? Is there any family correlation between GCA postings and actual golf architecture details? Should I be on the lookout for narrow minded fairways, loud widemouth bunkers and obtuse shape greens? ;)
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

1.  I like the par 5s on the front.  They both have interesting centerline/cross bunkers off the tee.
2.  #9 is a really fun drivable par 4.
3.  I also think the set of par 3s are very well done.
4.  Unfortunately, I'm sure there are many more houses around it now than when I used to play there.

Enjoy your round Tim.  I like the first 11 holes there a lot, after that it dropped off a bit IMHO.

Cheers,
Brad

No just the opposite actually: A lot of broad fairways, quiet bunkers that blend into the land and straightforward greens (some of that is true anyway).

I'd suggest you just go out there and play it without preconceived ideas from the masses on here and then tell us what you think. But that's just how I approach things--eg I'd prefer not to read a movie review before I see a movie.

Look for the picture of Kavanaugh behind the counter with Nick Faldo...You might note that Kavanaugh had him until a blow up very late in the round.

I only toured the course since I was too busy playing a not so near by Doak...I'm not a pretend dick.  I was most impressed with the low profile grass bunkers found on a couple of holes.  I don't recall seeing anything like them anywhere else.  I am glad the owners have been able to make money by selling homes, one of the benefits of hiring a great architect.

Be sure and have 75cents in toll money.  I was in a rental and didn't have any change and a camera caught me to the tune of $70.

I played last week and noticed that the rough was pretty long. Probably getting ready for the 2008 Pub Links. Ditto on the 9th hole being really fun. The front center green bunker is very unique with the sod faced look. The native grasses are some of the more visually attractive of the Denver courses on the Eastern Plains.

I'm in an agreeable mood today . . . I agree with Brad that the front 9 is more enjoyable than the back; I concur with John's comment about having change for toll money (I was caught out by that too); and I agree with Doug that you should evaluate it for yourself.

Hey Denver guys (you too JK). I think at the automatic exit machine on E470 if you don't have the change the machine will give you a pink slip to mail in within a week without a fine. At least they did a couple years back when I ran into the same problem.
