You make a very good point about the differences between fairway and greenside bunkers.  Shagginess in the former is acceptable, but cleanness in the latter is essential.  Shaggy faced greenside bunkers are no less reprehensible than US Open impenetrable greenside rough.  Both should be cryit doon.

Sir Fransworth,
This above edict of yours is the first clue that you may need to return to America, full time. You are clearly being influenced in a negative way and I strongly encourage you take advantage of the currency conversion and move back.
There's never been words you've written on here that I disagree more with with.

TOD;
Yes, there are courses here in dumbed down America that fit your description. Mostly in the Sandhills region, but there are a few exceptions elsewhere.

"Thought for the day:
Is there ANY American course that demonstrates the "John Kirk Effect" (ball roll interestingly) as well as the average reasonably good GBI course?
If so, name them.  If not, Why?"

Richard the Magnificent:

This is a very fine question, a huge one, in fact.

I think most all of us know why just about every American course is not this way.

However, for one that is, I guess I can give you NGLA today. It seems like they are back to total fairway acreage that might match or even exceed in some places the way the course was originally designed and intended.

Not just that but the place is fast, fast, fast.

As for another course that doesn't have it's original fairway acreage but is fast, fast, fast like the GBI courses in dry conditions, I give you Myopia.

I just had a report from the recent member/guest and they said the "though the green" speed of the course was almost insane.  ;)

To me this is a great thing. Even if it might seem insane to some at the very least it does show how a golf ball can bounce and roll and truck around ground contours at maximum speed.

When you are on a golf course and you hear golfers bellowing after full shots "Whoa, whoa, WHOA" you can be assured you are in the presence of the most IDEAL MAINTENANCE MELD!

Apparently Myopia was "Mallowesque" as I experienced that summer in '99.

Tom

Since the last time I played NGLA was in 2001 and the last time I played Myopia was in 1972, I shall defer judgement on your comments until I play either of them next, probably in 2030 or so.

I like that term "mallowesque" and I think I will heretofore adopt it as a description of ultra extreme ideal maintenance meldish playability.

One can't really say a course played "ideal maintenance meldish"----mallowesque sounds better.

Don't you also love using terms that make people say---"Damn what does he know that I don't"?  ;)

So if a golf course has "through the green" conditions that allow the ball to run 50-100 yards it will hereinafter be referred to as "Mallowesque".

Richard:

The fact that you played NGLA in the condition it was in that day is just a total crying shame. It really is. I could describe it to you the way it is now but that just wouldn't come close to what you'd feel if you hit a golf ball on it.

You take that redan, for instance. Play that thing in soft conditions and it's like sitting in a Stutz Bear Cat without an engine and wheels.

Actually, Tom, the way I played the Redan that day (cut to back left pin hit annoyingly straight into far left bunker), splash out to 3 feet, sink the putt, could have been accomplished regardless of the maintenance meld on the day....

The firmest, fastest course I've ever played of any note in the US is Wild Horse, in Nebraska.

I've played other more modest affairs that played that way during drought conditions due to lack of irrigation, but at Wild Horse I swear you could hear the ball make a "crunch" sound when it hit the fairways and greens.

As wonderful as Sand Hills was in subsequent days, it wasn't to that level of pure speed.

Tom Paul,

Did you read the Tillinghast article I sent re: Allen's purposeful inspiration and use of "clamshell" bunkers at Moorestown?

TP,

Did you see my question?
