8th at Muirfield Village

am I the only one who thinks this hole looks somwhat out of place compared to the rest of the golf course, what with the green elevated above bunkers which almost totally (or is it totally?) surrounding the green??

some think this is one of the most visible examples of Muirhead's influence.  the bunkers on 13 might be considered similar though.

Bur i think the playability of the hole is tough to argue with.  185 to a green that is abt 10 paces wide, and the player, if he misses the green, either has a downhill bunkershot (left bunker) or a shot to a green 3-4 feet above the ball (short left and right bunker)

I wouldn't argue for a change, as the hole is tough...

I Have always been disappointed with the housing along the course.  #8 is a good hole by itself.  What is most disturbing is the walk acxross the sstreet and the view into the neighbors's (albeit beautiful) backyard.  I think the hole, even from the member tees is a strong hole.  I can understand your thinking that the hole is bunkered differently than most of the other holes.  I sure would rather hit  a 185 yard into shot#8 than #9.

Unfortunately I only walked the back nine at the Memorial a few years back and am not familiar with the 8th.

Tommy your comment has made me curious though, how does the intrusiveness of the housing at MV compare to that at Castle Pines in Colorado. I know I just said I've walked the back at MV, but I've forgotten! I was impressed at CP that most of the homes were not very visable at all.

I have not as yet played CP.  I play it next month.  I'll let you know.  I did find the house on 2, 5, 7, 8 14, 18 to be visually disssturbing.  It seems to me that JN could have built a club without all the housing.

If memory serves the original single bunker used to almost completely encircle the green, save for one place for a walk off.  Now think there are 3 separate sand entities?

Wasn't it 1974 and Roger Maltbie the first winner there?

3 bunkers now.

course opened in '74.  first toonamint was in '76.  Maltbie lost the winners check in a bar that night, and had to go back to get it the next day.
