Captiva...............

I am due to go to Fort Myers on business in a couple of months. Is there something I should play in the area?

Sanibel or Captiva has a course called Sanctuary that has earned a high award for being environmentally sensitive.  I would check it out if I were in the area, but my wife and I just decided on Palm Beach Co. for a little trip so it will be a while.

The Dunes Club is nothing special, but I'm relying on memories over 25 years old.

I believe that the South Seas Plantation on Captiva Island has a nine hole layout that has some holes directly on the beach.  Other than this I know nothing of its merits or its design.

Bob you are getting near the heart of Art Hills country so beware in light of recent observations on here. I have not played Bonita Bay( one of Art's favorites) but I am curious if it is a solid course.

Bob,
I played Fiddlesticks (Ron Garl) couple of times some 20 years ago and liked it a lot.  Many trees, water, and waste areas.  Not a "Top X00" course, but a good, enjoyable test.

John B.

He's going to Captiva, not Bonita Springs (Marsh, Bay Island, Creekside) or Naples (Sabal, Cypress).

NAPLES is the heart of Art Hills country.  Personally, I love all 5 Bonita Bay courses.  Hills designed the first three.

I only mentioned the courses I knew of in the Sanibel/Captiva area.  If a drive is possible, that opens up all of Ft. Myers (Eastwood is a nice Municipal in N. Ft. Myers), Bonita Springs, and possibly Naples.

Bob,

I have been frequenting Sanibel/Captiva for 18 years.  The best course on either is The Sanctuary but you can't play without a member.  Pros name is Art Smithwick.  The Dunes accepts dailey fee play and is a fun, short course with a ton of water.  Sothseas Plantation is fun but only 9 holes.  Good Luck.

I would suggest Gateway, Eastwood, Ft Myers CC (old Donald Ross course) and Tiburon (which is really Naples).  If you truly are staying on Captiva - you should keep it mind that it will take at least 30-45 minutes just to get off the island and into Ft Myers.  If you're staying in Ft Myers, all the courses mentioned above should be within 30 minutes.
