This is not a request for access; only information.  My brother and partner must be in Salt Lake City next month for business and has an extra day.  Recommendations as to the most interesting available course are appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Which part of the Salt Lake area will they be in.  I can give you a few recommendations...

A week ago I played with a guy from SLC who lives next to Thanksgiving Point. He says the other course (I forget the name) in that area is much better.

He likes my home course so he must be knowledgeable.

There are a few other courses in the area, but the one he's probably talking about is TalonsCove.  Its a links-ish type course and plays right near Utah Lake.  Its also hosted the Utah Open at least once and other USGA qualifying if memory serves me right....

South Mountain
Old Mill

And if you need to be right by the airport, check out WingPointe....

That sounds correct. I remember him talking about it being on the lake. He also mentioned he liked South Mountain better than Thanksgiving Point.

Having played all three, they are all a lot of fun to play.  South Mountain is something to be seen.  Its cart ball at its absolute worst or best, depending on how you look at it.  It would be massive workout just to walk 9 holes, couldn't even imagine walking 18.

TalonsCove on other hand does have a couple of long-ish walks from green to tee, but for the most part is pretty decent.

Thanksgiving Point is to be seen though, and if you don't beleive me just ask Matt!    I need to get my camera out and do a review on each of them, especially a non-winter-ized version of TP.

If circumstances allow -- you should try to get out and play the TF private layout called Glenwild -- in Park City -- about 45-60 minutes east of downtown. Very impressive stuff indeed.

In terms of the public options -- I concur. Thanksgiving Point in Lehi is well done. For the classic types who hold-their-noses-in-the-air the course is a turnoff because of the manufactured look. However, Johnny Miller, in tandem with, I believe, Gene Bates, did a first rate job. In all the public courses I've played in the Beehive State -- TP is the best thus far.

All good choices although I would recommend Valley View (Layton), Hobble Creek (Springville) and Wingpointe above Old Mill.

It's been over 10 years since I've been to SLC/andor/Park City, but it's a great place for cheap and good value golf.

I'd agree with Dan on Valley View, which is really good,  but a personal favorite of mine is Bonneville, right in the foothills above town.   With nine holes built by Willie Tucker Jr. (when the hell did he ever get west), and the other nine by William Bell Sr & Jr, it's a treat.

I'm sure the new Johnny Miller and Tom Fazio CCFAD courses in town are ultimately "better" courses, but I bet they'd be hard-pressed to provide as much fun, interest, playability, and financial value.

Hey Dan,

Hobble Creek is quite good, I just wasnt sure if they wanted to travel and hour south to play it.  I recently played Valley View and while I really loved the greens, I don't know why they put in so many fake ponds and streams all over the place.
