Alternatives to wood chip
« on: May 16, 2007, 09:39:48 AM »
Has anyone seen an alternative to woodchip/pine needles as ground cover material to ornamental grasses or shrubs beds.
The areas I am talking about may come into play and I have my reservations with regard to the playing qualities of woodchips/pine needles, sand seems to offer a better medium but I know there may be specific reasons why this may not be considered, any suggestions for alternative materials?

We have some black colored ugly stuff here at Admirals Cove, suggest you avoid it.
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Eddie,
I once saw a method of using crushed up sea shells for footpaths and other certain areas on a very old course in Scotland. ;)

(All of these areas were in fact in play)

There is the synthetic pine straw from this company:

The big problem with that is all the synthetic stuff becomes movable obstructions which makes for a rules pain.

native pea gravel may work well if there is a local source....ball will sit up nicely if it lands in the shrub bed....doesn't cost much to mantain...oncot twice a year spray or retard weed or grass growth.
