Is this par 3 a bit ott ? .

[An almost] Island Green with sand and trees ? .

What purpose does the trees serve , to stop balls going into the river ?.

Anyone ever played here ? .

The trees may provide a natural form of stream bank stabilization. But, I agree it would be nicer without the trees.

Looks similar to the 17th at St.Andreas (? not sure if it is the correct spelling) in southern France. That plays about 220 yards of the back tees and is totally OTT. Maybe the trees are to help you to sense the distance.

Yes, it’s Saint Endreol in the Côte d’Azur in France, only about 15 mins from Saint Tropez. A par 3 - it’s the number 13. The course is laid out in on the side of a hilly valley with some holes running along a river. The European Ladies Tour have stopped here.

The course has some spectacular holes such as the 13th - I’m sure the Golf Course Architect Michel Gayon wouldn’t have wanted the trees on the right to grow  - which would have just been weeds shortly after the construction. Probably a case of "unthinking" maintenance program.

The wind get’s quite strong here so the bale out area on the left helps make the target area a little bigger. From the back tees it’s 224m add 10% makes 245 yards!!  However there are 4 other Tees between 176m and 100m to choose from.

As Jon notes the course is generally a bit over the top as far as forced carries and sloping fairways are concerned, but generally definitly worth a visit for a good Par 72 play in a spectacular setting, if you are touring the courses around the Côte d’Azur. Incidently Barbaroux, a great Pete Dye Course is not so far away.

Looks OK, better from 185 yards!
Is that the next tee directly behind the green?

The trees could be thinned after the election.

John
Since I posted the photo , I discovered some earlier ones and the trees arent there , so your thoughts are possibly correct .

I did wonder if they were acting as protection to an entrance/exit there on the right connecting to the path seen in the photo , but on the clubs website there is only water

245 yards ! , I suppose that explains the back bunker. For those of us that cant stop a 3wood/driver on a sixpence .

Thanks for the corrections John, I think it must have been that french wine :-\
