Bogey's question piqued my interest, so I did a little checking and came up with this very east-coast-centric (I haven't come close to having the time to check on the left coast) list of oceanfront courses (I defined oceanfront as lying directly against the eastern seaboard, not against a bay, sound or intracoastal waterway).
BTW, this list isn't comprehensive, nor can I support any of the dates other than by stating that I found them on the internet (and we know how much to trust in that)
1902 Samoset, Maine
1907 Prout's Neck, Maine
1919 Seminole
1919 Riomar Country Club, Fl (first nine)
1922 Maidstone
1926 Gulf Stream, Fl
1957 Red Reef, Fl
1961 Palm Beach Par 3
1962 Sea Pines Plantation - Ocean, SC
1964 Fripp Island - Ocean Point, SC
1964 Riomar Country Club (second nine)
1969 Palmetto Dunes - RTJ, SC
1972 Captiva Island Redfish Point, Fl
1973 Amelia Island - Ocean Links (first nine), Fl
**1980 Wild Dunes - Links
1981 Kiawah Island - Turtle Point
1986 Amelia Island - Long Point
1987 The Melrose Course - Daufuskie Island
1989 Hammock Dunes, Fl
1991 Kiawah Island - The Ocean Course
1995 Ocean Forest, Ga
1998 Amelia Island - Ocean Links (newest nine)
2000 Ocean Hammock, Fl
When placing the courses in chronological order, it is interesting to see the peaks in development running through the 1960's and the 1980's, both primarily in SC and Fl.
