Mark Rowlinson recommends several in his feature interviews.
I grew up in south Manchester and always enjoyed Stockport.

Delamere Forest is highly recommended, Herbert Fowler course is maybe 45 minutes south of MAN.

Mike Malone,

I'm sure you will get a lot of help from the knowledgeable members of the website.  However, you should just buck up and support your fellow Irish-American and buy Jim Finegan's guide books on England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

Then you'll enjoy the book on England and Wales as well.  Complete the trilogy and you will complete your training Luke, er Mike.

But Formby is in the same sort of price bracket as Hoylake.

If you want somewhere cheaper, Delamere is a sensible suggestion.  You could pair it with nearby Sandiway (Colt) if you fancy a double-header.  Stockport is always well presented although it might be a little short for a big hitter (only two par 4s in excess of 400 yards).  There's a heck of a lot of fun to be had at Reddish Vale (MacKenzie) and it's very easily accessible from the airport.  There's also a later MacKenzie course, Cavendish, at Buxton which is not hard to get to - fascinating greens - but it might be a little early in the season for it - it's up in the hills.

Thanks for the feedback. Somehow my friend was able to get on Hoylake for $50.
