JK:
Steve Lavin is absolute slime, and was a horrible coach at UCLA. They couldn't wait to get rid of him at the end. If we hire him, I divorce all ties and root for St. Mary's. But you're right, we couldn't afford him anyway - thank God.
Majerus has indicated several times in the past that a place like St. Mary's is his "dream job", so perhaps he would be interested in a little less bucolic Santa Clara. But he took the USC job briefly and then turned it down; not only can we not afford him, but I can't see why he'd come here anyway. The hotter rumors are he goes to USD (which also has an opening now that they fired Brad Holland); that would seem a bit more likely to me, as they are willing to go a bit further than SCU financially.
A more concrete rumor was Montgomery, but his price is also too high, and word is if he comes back to coaching it will be for a much larger program - either Oregon (if Kent is fired and Few from Gonzaga doesn't want to move); or Gonzaga (if Few goes to Oregon as rumored, and they buy out their asst. coach Grier who has it in his contract he gets the job when Few leaves); or AZ, if Lute decides to retire. Monty will not be coming to the Mission Campus.
Much more likely are Grier from Gonzaga (if he gets tired of waiting for Few or gets bought out); Reynaud from Cal (top assistant); Kurt Rambis; or some other assitant from a top program.
In any case, as I say, who the coach is wouldn't seem to matter as much as IF we step up commitment, as promised. Us alums are watching anxiously. We obviously have no real hoops to watch this time of year, for the 12 year in a row...

ps - I said Lynn would regret asking this. Jeez I like golf, but I LIVE for SCU hoops.
