The Olympic Club - Lake
« on: January 31, 2007, 11:24:31 PM »
What can you say, three US Amateurs after this year, three US Opens and a couple Tour Championships.  This course has all the history of any prestigious venue in sports.  With the Amateur coming this summer, and the US Open in 2012, it appears it will continue to be one of a few courses which as challenged players for well over 50 years.

To start, I was reminded of the tenth hole at Crystal Downs when teeing off on #1 on the Lake course.  I thought I was going to shatter a picture window with my backswing.  :o

The course is undergoing some renovations in the form of new tee boxes, and redoing some of the bunkers.  The bunkers look fantastic, as you could see where they had recently laid in some new sod.  The fourth and fifth holes are two of the toughest back to back par 4's anywhere.

The greens are extremely small, at least compared to some of the ones I'm used to playing.  They were rolling pretty well and some putts were downright scary once the ball made the westerly turn toward Lake Merced.  I can't even imagine this course when the rough is up, and the greens are around tournament speeds.  Simply Unbelieveable.

As always, here are some pictures from the adventure.  Enjoy!

Don't leave the Club without eating one of the legendary cheeseburgers.  They are UNREAL!

The first tee with the proshop staff watching your first tee shot fly ANYWHERE.  :o

Second Green from the First Fairway

New back teebox on #2

The view from #2 tee.  Note the green strip of grass in the distance just above the dead tree.  It is the first hole at SFGC.

Needless to say I wasn't smiling finding my ball 15 yds. behind the 2nd green.

Cool Bench on the 6th tee.

Sixth Green Setting

Awesome Three Tiered 7th Green.

Great Uphill Par 3 8th.

Par 4 9th Green

Tee shot of the infamous 609 yd. 16th.

Par 5 17th

The downhill lie, uphill approach.  Could you have a better setting to finish a round of golf?

I'm so glad you got a photo of those bunkers, I bet you were "smiling" all day long ...

Ps:  Had to be a misclub or bladed bunker shot to end up in that location.

Great photos... any ideas on the extent of the tree removal?  Seems a heck of a lot more air on that course since the last time I played it a decade ago... many holes felt like corridors back then... arb:

Thanks for the photos; I've not been there since the tree removal project started and it looks great.
You'd make a fine little helper. What's your name?

Its about 80% the secret meat recipe and 20% the shape (that they're on a hot dog bun which makes them much more convenient to eat when walking). You also dont feel stuffed after eating one...

It's funny to see guests who havent been to the club in a while craving them at the turn...

Anthony,
The tree removal has been phenomenal. They have taken out a lot of trees. As a total guess I would say 500+. When I was there last year I saw parts of the property I never knew existed. It is nice to be able to see more of the course while you are playing each hole. They could still take out some more trees, but it is greatly improved.
Also, the super started a program of putting sand down and the fairways are noticeably firmer. Not links firm, but much better than it used to be.

Of the pictures included in this set, the fifth most dramatically shows the tree removal- that hillside, left of the 2nd tee, behind the 3rd green and left of the 4th hole used to be as thick as Sherwood Forest...

Technically, it is the turn +1 ...

Here is a photo the really shows the clearing of trees from the 5th green back to the 4th green.

Standing on the 3rd tee, can you count how many golf holes you can see?  And they are not all from Olympic Lake ...

Mike,
What is your estimate of the number of trees removed so far?

How many holes can one see from three tee as shown in Mike's picture?

Hmmmm... my non-expert guess is:

2 holes at SFGC, one at Lake Merced plus 1 on the Ocean course and 6 or so on the Lake ...

How did I do?

Mike,
What is your estimate of the number of trees removed so far?

What ever it is, there still need for far more to be removed especially down at the bottom of the property between 5 & 12, 12 & 13, as well as between both sides of 9.

It's funny to play with long-time members who originally hated the new open look, who it seems have cottoned up to it over time.

The long-time members should know the course was there before the trees where....

Especially when there are photos adorning the walls of the grill and locker room of the nearly treeless golf course.

Wow. That place looks like pure class. Great pics. My buddy played a round out there last year and said that you really have to "hit shots" to score out there.

Thanks for sharing.
