Firm and fast...and frozen!
« on: January 03, 2007, 07:33:21 PM »
There's nothing like the crunch of the morning frost to know you're golfing when you shouldn't be. Set a new personal record today -- golfed on the 3rd day of the new year in Wisconsin. Of course, this being January golf in Wisconsin, I had to wait a few times on tees and approach shots, as the course was pretty busy.

Phil, shame on me, I missed yesterday, but played today.  Oh yeah baby, I'm playing tomorrow too!  ;) ;D

I hit a beautiful 7 iron about 148, high and came down pin high and 3 feet left.... bounced up about 25feet, and went behind the green about 20 yards! ::)  We are going to hold the Al Gore, Inconvenient Truth Open tomorrow.  Might as well get some humor out of it before the apocolypse.  :-\

Matthew, aren't you 365 days a year of golf there in sunny County Down?  And aren't you back in school yet?

Good God no!  We have about a foot of snow, if not more, here in Northeastern Colorado.  This is the first time in years that we have not been able to play golf throughout the winter.

And yes, I'm quite jealous of those of you have been able to get out and play!

I moved from South Bend to Albuquerque last week. The Benders are playing golf as I speak...and I'm sitting here looking at the snow!

But I'm going to Scottsdale next week...so I'm going to rub it back in to those friends who keep reminding me of our current situation  ;D

There's been little sign of global warming in the Denver Area.

Played 5 times in December here in Cincy, played again yesterday. We NEED some hard freeze the Winter, for agricultural reasons. But it sure is fun.

Heck... It's going to be 62 on Saturday over here in Connecticut, and I'm going to see if I can't squeeze another round out of the winter.

I just hope this doesn't means we're in for an inordinately snowy March...

With an amazing lack of snow here in Marquette, and temps hovering near 40, I've been hitting balls along the beach of Lake Superior in my backyard - 1000 yards or so down one way, and then 1000 yards or so back.  The beach sand is nice and firm due to the consistently cold temps.  I hit balls out there about a half dozen times in the last week or two of January, but since then we've had a mix of ice and snow and I'll probably be through until Kapalua in a couple of weeks.

Some people here have been sneaking over to a local public track to play, but all courses are officially closed and thankfully no one has been sneaking on our club's courses.

All these above-normal temps may have their consequences though; I'll leave it to the agronomists here for specifics, but won't the turf generally suffer from the lack of a nice, warm snow blanket if all it gets is ice, thin snow, and later freezing temps?

I played again today in mid 40s, very windy.  The greens were still frozen yesterday early.  But with afternoon sun, and it didn't freeze over night, the greens thawed more and were actually holding normal today!  The poa on greens is definitely growing and low areas in FW are getting lush!  They say we will again have 40s tomorrow.

Let's see now... watch rosey and the view and continuing saga with the Donald, listen to oprah remake a bunch of girls in S.A. into her own image, play along with "who wants to be a millionaire", jump back into the TEPaul vs D Moriarity fray while sitting at my computer in my pajamas posting on GCA, or maybe golf??  hmmmmmm  ;D

Are greens more susceptible to damage from pitch marks and shoes in frosty weather?
