The Concession

#1 new course in America by GD. I am not sure about that, but a very good course none the less. It is by far the best new course in Florida and will merit discussion for best modern course in Florida. I think it is the best pure Jack course I have played.  The course is on a 500 acres tract with a fair amount of trees and good natural vegitation. Thre are no plants on the course that are not indiginous to the area. The theme is Ryder Cup based on the 1969 Tony Jacklin/Nicklaus concession. The course is without housing except on one border and set so far off the course one only sees it in the distance. There are 3 sets of tees with a 7470 yards, 6600 and 6050. I looked at all holes from the back and played the course at 6600. The back tees for the most part added distance and not a change in angles or how the hole set up. slope 155,146 and 139. I liked the front nine better than the back. There are very few holes with water on the front and my 2 favorite holes being 6 and 8 are there. I will do a hole by hole tonight.

Wasn't this "pure Jack" course co-designed by Tony Jacklin?

I don't think I'll buy my villa there. If the forward tees are at 6000y, my wife will not be happy. ;D

I won't either, that area has the dredded "Red Tide" and I understand when it arrives, the stink is awful
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

I caught a little bit of the Playing Lessons with the Pros with Tony Jacklin this morning at 5:30, filmed at The Concession.

It looked quite nice on TV - lots of width, lots in interesting bunkering, you could actually see contour on the greens.

But I don't think I could ever really love a course that had fairways that flat. Maybe it was just TV.

I wouldn't worry too much, Cary.  The place is a gazillion miles from Sarasota Bay on the other side of the I-75.  My mom has a place on Longboat Key and the red tide is pretty rare.  Hurricanes, however, are a different story.

John, I stand corrected. Jacks shop did the work. Jacklin was the heart and soul of the project and lived it, therefore I should give proper credit. One would be shocked at how much golf course is here given that a relatively small amount of dirt was moved for a upscale Florida course on flat land.
Hole 1. Par 4 428 back 382 middle. A solid opening dog leg left par 4. one bunker left and two right giving one several ways to play the hole. the green favors  shot from the left to the green with large bunker front right and mid green left. You can easily put it in the left bunker off the tee if you are aggresive and do not hit a perfect drive.
2. Par 4 476  back 414 middle, strong dog leg right par 4. large fairway bunker on right with water from there to green. green sets up best for right middle of fairway. there is room left but holes really lengthens out. Fazioish undulating green, which happens enough to make me pause about best in us 2006. There are a number of par 4's with nice undulating greens with no rhyme or reason to the undulations in the Fazio way. These do seem to feel natural though.
3. Par 5 578 back 505 middle. I weak hole with a great green complex. I did not get this par 5 for it is easy to hit in two with a fairway trap on both sides but really not in play. all sorts of things up by the green but just a little without real options, jst a few average choices. It looks like one should always just hit it on the green or close. The green complex rescues the hole with its interesting levels and undulations. This green works.
4. Par 3 237 back 200 middle good solid long par 3 with green setting nw/se bunker short front and two back. Green narrows to the back. By the by the greens tended to be in the 5000 to 6000 square foot range.
5. Par 4 478 back 384 middle really good florida style par 4. water left the whole hole with two fairway bunkers in the right side and middle of fairway creating a neck at 231 off middle tee.
Green is undulating like most. green has bunker short left and mid right. Very good hole
6. My favorite par 4 183 back 164 middle well bunkered hole with water between green and tee but not in play. Incredible natural seetng framed by live oaks. bunkers around the entire right die and one on left. good green complex
7. Par 5 606 back 537 middle really interesting big dog leg left. Best par 5 on course with wild undulating green. Traps full length of tee ball on left. One stroke penalty trap. Well placed trap in right part of fairway to test tee shot strategy. Wetlands area to test layup or gong for green in two.
8. Par 4 374 back 322 middle, excellant short par 4. It is slight dog leg right. My second favorite hole after 6. Stream runningsw/ne from fairway across fronright of green . good bunker on upper lef tof green. Small green complex with enough going on to make it a great short par 4. I was told it is Jacklins favorite hole.
9. Par 4 434 back 386 middle dog leg right. One fairway bunker on left 246 off tee to make one think. Trees off tee on right side of fairway to drive over or fade around. Slightly elevated green set se/nw with bunker short left.

Most of the greens sit naturally and the scale of dirt moving was such as to appear natural in its overall surroundings. there are a lot of trees around the front nine which created a wonderful feel of being the only people on the course.
