Ah, doesn't this also bring to mind Shivas's old proposition for a rough center strip in the LZ as well?   ;) ;D  I always new that Dave was a back to the future sort of guy...

Careful Dickyboy. Shivas also thought the 15th at Pebble would be improved with CL bunkers. Well, they listened, and have ruined the hole.

Two in the original nine at my course.  When it expanded to 18, one of the new 9 had them and the big one on what is now #18 was removed.

Jeff,

Thanks for starting this thread.  Several new designs here in Atlanta incorporate CL bunkers and others that "challenge," and I've been wondering whether it's becoming a trend in our area.  I hope so.  I like the way it introduces, in some cases, what you call the "zig zag" nature of golden age design.  You seem to mean that favorably, but then you write this:

"I would also ask the question of whether a course full of optional carry bunkers.. is any more interesting than one full of flanking bunkers?  ... I imagine the shot demands and visuals of 18 holes with optional forced carries might have been as repetitive as any modern design in a different style!"

At first glance I wondered whether you might be contradicting yourself, but I suppose what you're saying is that while carry bunkers might be a good thing one shouldn't get carried away.

I'm of one with the Hanse remark noted by Mark Fine, and also with the suggestion of the occasional strip of rough in a landing zone.  I'm surprised we don't see more of that.  Don't like it, cut it.
