Golf in Curacao
« on: November 02, 2006, 12:10:41 PM »
I am planning a trip to Curacao.  What is the general impression of Blue Bay Golf Club.  I know it was designed by Rocky Rocquemore (Who from what I undersand, has done some work in Portugal).  I have no experience at all with him.  Anyone tried it out?

Thanks,

Dave
And I took full blame then, and retain such now.  My utter ignorance in not trumpeting a course I have never seen remains inexcusable.

David,

I don't know anything about Blue Bay in particular, but regarding Rocky...

He learned under Joe Lee and his style follows that typical form.  He has done plenty of work here in Georgia, where he is from.  Most of it is pretty solid though rarely spectacular.

Keith.

Don't know the course but Rocky did some good work here on Grand Bahama with Dick Wilson and Joe Lee.

I was looking for information on this course too as a possible stop on a cruise.  The closest I found to a review is at

http://www.worldgolf.com/features/caribbean-golf-curacao-overview.htm

Sounds like it could be interesting, scenic and fun.  Seems that pace of play wouldn't be a problem.  And if you like brown, it could be just the place.

Could there really be a course that no one in the tree house has played.

David--

Blue Bay is a course right out of the Joe Lee mold.  There are several holes on dramatic, oceanfront property.

Big problem on  Curacao as with all of the islands in the Caribbean.....water.  They don't irrigate the fairways at Blue Bay because of it and they will probably not have much turf on them.  It's too bad becasue it could be really good.  Anyone say paspallum.

I will elaborate further if you'd like...

There is one other course on Curacao that I did not visit, the nine hole Curacao G & CC.  It's supposed to be a very busy place, but don't know much else.

I did not have much time to elaborate on the course at Blue Bay yesterday, but here we go.

The course definitely fits the Joe Lee look in terms of bunkering and routing.  Both nines start out with par fives as you would typically see on a Lee course, the 10th being a real nice reachable hole with water on the left.  The 3rd has some unusal hazards, cacti sprinkled throughout the fairway.

There are three real standout holes:  the 220 yard par 3 fifth hole whose green is perched above the ocean.  The short par 3 has a green perched on top of a volcano that kind of reminds me of #6 at Roaring Gap except that the one here is a bit more punishing if you miss left because there is a dropoff the same as there is on the right.  The finisher is a really good, long par four with the ocean on the left.  The rest of holes fit the Lee, Roquemore Florida mold; with the exception that it is not totally flat here.

I hope that someday, someone will put the money into the course and put paspalum in because the course has potential.

I advise you to take a cab from Fredikstad (sp?) because Blue Bay is not the easiest place to find and they do have a guard gate out front.  It's about a 10-15 minute ride from where the cruise ships dock.

Have been to Curacao, leave the clubs home and do another few dives. The far end of the island is wonderful.

My CGA friends also recommend diving rather than golfing there. One problem with paspalum is some island-countries do not allow brackish water to be used for irrigation as it affects the groundwater (this may not be true but they are saying it might).
