I haven't been to Wentworth, nor am I a very well-versed Colt-aphile, but this discussion, while thorough, seems a bit weird to me.
Obviously there are reasons for the changes, as it is a popular tournament venue, but if Ernie and co. are going to renovate the course, why hold on to lines like "we will not change the character of the course"? I suppose it is/was done in the spirit of Colt, but it sounds like the course (save the greens) will be quite different.
On the other hand, there does seem to be a progression on many courses in the UK to have several architects modify the the great courses over the years due to technology, safety, infrastructure, ease of maintenance, etc....
